    bosch DA and speeds settings

    Hi everybody! Long time no post! Just bought myself a mildly used bosch PEX400AE for $40 . Now I'm just waiting for a goodie bag, that my auntie is going to send from the US (Meguiars Poland has everything, but they're expensive )

    I plan to attack several cars with #83+W8006--->#80+W8006--->NXT wax.

    My question is about the speed settings I should use in every step, can somebody help? These are the specs of the bosch:

    Power input: 400 W
    Sanding plate diameter: 125 mm
    Orbital stroke rate: 9.000 – 26.000 rpm
    Eccentricity: 2,50 mm
    Machine weight: 1,9 kg

    You got a very nice deal!

    Speed settings for certain step depend on several factors, two of which are orbit size (eccentric offset) and polish being used for that step. Therefore even for machine that there is a lots of experience with (like G100) they are not cast in stone but a reccomandation for starting point. Therefore it is practically impossible to translate them directly into settings for tool with different specs. Thus I am afraid you will have to experiment with speeds until you find out what works best for you (keeping in mind there is such a thing as too high speed at which polish is working worse than it is able to. In the meantime I know there have been posts on this tool so you might want to search for them and contact people that own them to see what has been their experience and do they have any recommandations for you. IIRC Bence is one of them and has done some incredible work with it.

      Thanks Zoran, I think we both jump on the end of the string when someone talks about these little Bosch joy buzzers...

      Perkoz, the 400 is a well built machine with more power than you might thought initially. In fact, the high speeds are surprisingly capable especially when breaking down polishes properly, and in terms of finishing/clarity.

      As Zoran said, nothing is set in stone, but as a rough guide, you can use speed 1-3 for waxing (depends on the spreadability), 2-4 for spreading polishes, and 5-6 to work them in/correcting. Yes, it can do pretty good correction. I've taken out 2000 grit sanding marks with mine (actually a PEX270AE), and it can generate cozy warm heat under the pad.

      One significant advantage is that you can use it over anything without the basic need to tape up the car. Just go over an oxidized B-pillar and it will be glossy black without harming the surrounding rubber/plastics. Of course, you can achieve this with any other DA, but the 13.000 OPM is just wonderful. Quick, powerful and produces great results. Excellent tool.

        To answer your question. I think best you keep your polishing and finishing between speed 1 and 2 only...

        9000 RPM is very fast in fact..if OPM i think would be slot slower ?

        Anynow how where to find converter for RPM > OPM (orbital per min) or wise versa ?

            As orbit is in majority of the cases random path that can also be different from tool to tool one can not compare orbit to rotation so conversion from OPMs to RPMs and vice versa is impossible.

              i use the same model (cost alot more than $40 though-bargain!) with CCS pads and use speed 3 for paint cleaner/polish, and speed 4-5 for removal (e.g. #80). seems to work very well and with minimal hazing, even using a light cutting pad. in your case i would use speed 4-5 for #83 and #80, then speed 2 for waxing.

                  Just don't fret of the speeds! Short throw/high speed DAs are different animals than other machines. They can correct very good, finish excellent and still they are safe.

                  Bump the speed up and watch the transformation! You'll see what polish needs certain speeds and everything will become second nature.
