    Finally: The full review of the NEW G220


    Here’s the full review I promised in another post:

    A week ago I got the chance to test the G220EU in ideal conditions, inside and on a hood we (Me and Dibbuz from the Dutch Meguiar’s forum) got from the wreckers yard. We compared the G220EU to the AEG 460EXE random orbital sander, the reason why we use the AEG is because we don’t have a dedicated detailing machine in Europe like you guys over there.

    But finally we got one! The G220EU!

    Yesterday we tested it on a full detail we did on an Audi A2. There was an other car There, a Peugeot 307. The location was provided by a Friendly Meguiar’s dealer who also supplied us with an extra G220EU and took care of the drinks and some food!

    What sound levels are concerned is that the G220EU and AEG are more or less equal to each other, the AEG is about 2 dB higher than the G220EU. But due to the frequency of the sound it makes, it’s a bit more easy to bare than the AEG. So no definite winner here, but of a positive thing for the G220EU
    The power cord of the G220EU is 1 meter shorter than the AEG, that’s a pity, a longer cord is, in my opinion, better. So the AEG scores better here.

    The weight of the G220EU is heavier than the AEG, the difference is about 300 gr. This weight was measured with the power cord on the machine. The difference is hardly noticeable, because when we had it in our hands, we thought that de AEG was heavier. No definite winner here we think.

    We did some tests on the hood from the wreckers yard, wet sanded a bit and tried to remove the scratches with the G220EU. We know it isn’t made for this purpose, but we wanted to see what this machine could do. We tested it with different pads (W8006 and W7006) and different compounds (M80, M83). It performed well, but didn’t remove all the scratches, but they were almost 90% less. But the AEG performed more or less the same. So… again no definite winner here too.

    Ergonomics, this is where the G220EU out classes the AEG, being a random orbital sander, the model of the AEG is very different from the G220EU. The AEG had a sort of a tower model, on flat surfaces that’s presents no problem, but on side panels, there is a problem… The G220EU scores high marks there. You can even operate the G220EU with one hand if needed. That’s nearly impossible with the AEG. G220Eu is clearly the winner here!

    Power, the AEG is 460 Watts and the G220EU 550 Watts, as I don’t know the power output on the shaft of the machine, I will have to take a guess and go on the things I’ve noticed while testing. The G220EU seems to be more powerful than the AEG, you can put a bit more pressure on it compared to the AEG. G220EU seems to be the winner here also.

    Now for some negative things we found with the G220EU…. The case the G220EU comes in… who thought of this?? Okay, it looks great and is nice and small, ahhh that’s the problem: it’s too small! You’ll have to disassemble the G220EU to get in back in the case! And there is no room for extra things like backing plates and so on. Clearly a hind side thing. If you use the G220EU only for a couple of times a year, this isn’t a problem, but for most of us it is. But we found a solution! Put it in a duffel bag, it fits perfectly and you’ve got room for all your extra things!

    Second thing is the handle that comes with the machine, looks pretty good… but on the first tests on the hood I moved the handle from the upright position to the forward position, that worked better, on that hood at least. Second problem with the handle is that it vibrates more than the machine itself, it amplifies the vibration of the machine, bad thing.
    But yesterday on the test car I removed the handle all together, that worked great! At first I thought I didn’t have enough grip on the front of the machine, but it turned out to be okay, could be a bit better though.

    Another negative thing we found is the price…the G220EU retails for 366,- USD over here and the AEG retails for 221,- USD, a big difference! But would I buy one? Hell yes! I’m looking for a new owner for my AEG and then there’s a G220EU coming!

    Here’s a small recap of the things we found:

    Pros:
    - Ergonomics
    - Noise levels
    - Weight

    Cons:
    - The Case (useless in our opinion)
    - The handle
    - The price here in Europe

    The Audi A2 we did had such a hard paint finish that we had to resort to using a rotary and W7006/M83, we finished of with the G220EU, W8006 and M80. No pictures of the results… It was already dark, which was bad. In the pictures you’ll also see a Makita BO6040. It was a great day and we had lots of fun

    Thanks for this feedback, most people take the handle of the G100/PC and it never sees the light of day again. It will be interesting if this is the trend for our new G110 and G220

    Thanks for adding this little bit of information as in our experience we have found the same thing, that is the paint on the Audi's we've worked on have all been pretty hard and required a rotary buffer to remove any substantial swirls and scratches. Hardness makes a paint real durable but makes it almost impossible for the average person, for example the owners, to work on their own car's paint unless their a trained, experience Professional.

      Hi stimoy68,

      thanks for your review, that's a really interesting written one.

      I also heared that the paint of VW, Audi and the other brands of the same concern is hard and so comes that defenetly a cutting pad is needed.

      I was told that for Opel I will only need #80 and a polishing pad to remove most of the defects.

        Yeah Opel will be fine with #80. i used #83 with a polishing pad it was one of the easiest cars i have done.

            I have an Opel myself, a Vectra from 1999 dark green metallic (175.000 kms on it now) :



            And the finish is quite hard, but not as hard as the Audi, some area's I did with the rotary and M83 and finished off with M80 with a dual action machine.

                Those are some dutch fried snacks called "kroketten" and "frikandellen", a "kroket" is a snack made of ragout covered in breadcrums and than fried, a "frikandel" is a sort of a fried roll of meat. ;-)

                    Well what is on the left looks very much like a "sausage"! Have no idea what the rest of it looks like!

                    I always wondered if or how to get into the smaller areas of the bodywork, now i see how too! just need to get the right tools for the jobs!

                      Where can I get a G220 here in the states??? The other question it's it's the G220 100V to 240V ??? meaning, can I get one and use it here in the us and overseas ????
