A safe way to remove grime from the engine bay:
    1) remember that plastic and aluminum and anodized parts can be stained by too alklin a cleaner.
    2) if unsure of the strength of a all purpose cleaner delute to manufactures recommendations or take a PH strip and measure the PH rating from 7 which is neutral to 12 which is White wall cleaner and will strip valuable anodizing and turn alumimun to blotchy white including plastics.
    3) a PH of 8 1/2 to 9 will take off dirt and grime spray a liberal amount on the effected areas remembering to cover important electrical connectiions such as the OBD-1 connector on older cars and distributor and air cleaner passages.
    4) let chemical dwell this means to let it work to loosen particles so they can be flushed away with water.
    5) I prefer a solvent gun to a hose. The air injected with the fine mist of warm water helps surgerly remove dirt grime with out the big hammer effect and acts as a safe guard to fine electrial sensors.
    6) I prefer a controlled flow of air to the side not directly on the parts of the engine to remove water. A leaf blower or a perfessional blower and compressor air gun will survise, but wear goggles to protect your eyes and take your time slowely to massage over areas were water has collected.
    7) use a clean towel to do aa final wipe down and a bottle of deluted cleaner and water to get missed areas like the bottom of washer bottles and Power steering pumps.
    8) use a none dimethal silcone base protectant vs a solvent base dressing. Again let dwell and use an air blower to help set dressing.
    9) finally message dressing on to areas with another clean towel.
    10) pick up a beer or cold drink optional stan back and admire your work.

    Hehe.

All kidding aside, it looks like that I-6 will need some De-greaser. Probably Super Degreaser. It some great stuff and you can dilute it as needed. 4:1 would probably be best for that engine.

Watch the distributor cap, it may get wet and not fire properly. Ive had that happen on the I-6's before.

edit: just noticed this was from march. Im getting tired of all these old threads.

    Greased Lightning Orange Blast.!!!!

Spray engine, let it sit, then pressure wash spray 2 feet away from wires and electrical things. Otherwise gets closer to firewall etc....
That engine looks pretty safe, compared to newer vehicles I've done..

Looks like you have some serious cleaning to do there. This is what I have done on several compartments in far worse shape.
    1. Super Degreaser doused liberally.
    2. Work the problem areas with regular round parts brush. (from any good Auto Parts store)
    3. Repeat as needed.
    4. Hose off with just the regular garden hose nozzle. (not set for too much Hi Press spray) Avoid spraying directly onto electrical components. If in doubt, cover with tin foil, as in use your own good judgement. If in doubt, cover or remove it. I have had no problems, but do take care.
    5. Douse liberally with All Season Dressing EVERYWHERE while still wet.
    6. Close hood, let sit overnight.
    7. Morning, open hood wipe where needed with a cheapie terry towel.
    8. VOILĂ€! After a short trip or two, any greasy film that might be left will dissipate.
All of these products can be obtained from Auto Detailing Solutions.

I'm learning the extensive line, so it might take a while to memorize it all.

    Safe D-greaser has been obsoleted.

    Use either:
    Super D-greaser (more powerful) or
All Purpose Cleaner Plus (Similar or a little less in strength).

I never thought Safe D-greaser was all too strong. I'm probably going to try some Super for my next go at underhood cleaning.

I can't find a product called Safe D-greaser. I'm not familiar with the whole product line. Has it been replaced with something new?

The Safe D-greaser along with a blast of water from the hose should take almost everything off.

Hyperdressing leaves a finish that you can vary from very low gloss to very shiny depending on the dilution. It doesn't really attract much dirt at all. A lot less than what I thought it would. It's not a tacky/sticky finish but somewhat slick.

The best part is, that even if it does get dirty/dusty, you just hose it off with water and reapply the Hyperdressing. Dirt doesn't stick anymore because of the layer of Hyperdressing. You shouldn't really need to degrease and clean much again.
