  • Window Cleaning

    Hey Everybody,
I have been detailing cars off and on for about 8 years and the one thing I still can not fully get right is cleaning windows. I have tried about everything to get them cleaned but to my surprise they still are dirty (cloudy film). Any info that can be passed along would be greatly appreciated. Robert Koger

For windows I use the Detailer line glass cleaner and the Ultimate Wipe micro fober cloth with great results. Invisible glass is a good product also.

Invisible Glass is available at Meijer's and many auto parts stores. You may want to try some crumpled up black and white newspaper for final wipe off until the new MF glass cleaning towels are available. The newspaper (along with glass cleaner) works for me when removing salt residue in the winter.

I am a big user of the Window Cleaner Concentrate and I also share your frustration on windows as well. The WCC is a good product but it also leaves some streaking. I have gone to using just a wet MF and a dry MF behind it, seems to work much better.

Two tips that I have found useful is to (1) lean into the window a bit, use some presure. And (2) keep turning your towel (cotton or MF) over for a fresh surface.

Also when I clean windows I don't just spray the cleaner on the window and go; I use a small, wrung out wet rag or wash cloth and spray cleaner on that. Take the rag and hit the edge or rim of the glass then the middle. This helps to break up the dirt and make it much easier to remove off the window with your clean dry MF or terry towel.

Try using two towels. One damp, and one dry. Maybe different colors. Use less cleaner than you think...

Halogen lights from the opposite side will help as much as sunlight. Wipe one way on the outside, and the other way on the inside....

                    PC.
Look towards the mid to late February time-frame to be able to purchase accessories. New products, except for aerosols should be available for online ordering sometime in mid to late January.

Look forward to seeing this Super towl in Oz.

I have always stuck with newspaper. Ive tried a few window wipe towels that promise this streak free result, and unfortunately they dont. They pick up alot of dirt and you end up wiping dirt onto windows.

Newspaper works a treat, only prob is if you dont wear gloves, ik goes onto your hands....

I have the ultimate (no pun intended) test for the new NXT glass cleaner and duo fiber towel.........road salt residue. Right now the only thing that works for me is crumpled up newspaper, black and white print preferred along with Invisible Glass or Eagle One 20/20.

Road salt residue is just about the most difficult thing to remove from a windshield without streaking. I would rather tackle baked on bug guts anytime!

The IG/ whatever other glass cleaner via crumpled newspaper never worked well at all for me. I even took some brand new, old and in between aged newspaper to see if it made any difference.I just wound up with a big mess of damp newspapers and ink all over my hands.

Try using a cotton lint free towel for the initial wipe off and just use the newspaper to finish up. This is kind of a trial and error process. Also vary the amount of window cleaner applied.

I found that some window cleaners that are horrible in the summer (dry too fast) work. Clear Vue by Turtle Wax was horrible in the summer but worked good in the winter. My theory is that in the winter, the problem is that the window cleaner does not want to dry, so it streaks. So if you try something that dries too fast in the summer, it may be perfect for winter use. Have you ever tried Eagle One 20/20?

I tried 20/20 several years ago. It was ok, more hit or miss. Actually, I've found the cleaner that has satisfied me most to be a simple 50 to 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Usually lightly spraying a dedicated glass mf does alright. It's certainly not perfect though

I am planning on experimenting with one or more obscure brands of glass cleaners. It appears sometimes more than one product is necessary.
