  • Resume

I'm applying for a job opening at a BMW dealership for detailing. I only have about 6 months detailing experience with only Meguiars products. I have some experience buffing with polish.

Anyways, what should I put on my resume for this?

There's lots of resources online for creating a top notch resume, just be sure to keep it honest, short and to the point, one page max.

You could also maybe print out a color copy of one of these threads,

We encourage MOL members to show off their latest before & after results. We also welcome "Work in Progress" Threads. For Enthusiasts or Professional Detailers

If during the interview you feel comfortable with how it's going you could offer to show them some of you work as you've posted on the MOL forum.

This will show them that you can detail cars well enough to share the results with your peers here on the MOL community which will also show them that you're serious about car detailing to the point that you're educating yourself by hanging out on a forum with great name recognition in this industry.

    Might help....

I already have a resume saved, but it's for all of my network engineering. I don't think I'd really have much to put in the detailing resume. Any ideas?

Should I just ask for an intern position for now until I learn more and get more experience?

        Re: Resume

I have some input here as I recently had to sort through literally hundreds of resumes looking for the right person to hire. Out of the hundreds, a few really stood out because of their format. One guy had a section called "Skills" and instead of just typing a paragraph about the skills he had, he created a table with one skill in each box. It was so easy to read it just jumped off of the page! He did something similar for Products he was proficient at using. Example:

        Skills

        Rotary buffingDA PolishingHand Polishing
        CompoundingWet SandingCarpet Stain Removal
        Interior CleaningEngine DegreasingPaint Defect Removal

        Hope this helps...Good luck

            Re: Resume

Resume is like advertising for yourself.

I have ** experience in the proper techniques in the removal of paint imperfections and maintaining of automobile paint. This includes single stage paints as well as base coat, clear coat paint jobs.

            My Skills:
Knowledge in the correction of paint, maintain paint gloss, correct use of products, equipment and procedure designed for paint correction and protection.

The five step process I use is:

1)Washing vehicle using proper procedure to prevent more damage to the finish of the car using proper equipment.

2)Cleaning paint using proper products to remove embedded particles from paint surface

3)Polishing paint using the proper products and equipment designed to remove imperfections from paint.

4)Waxing paint using proper techniques, products and equipment to protect paint.

5)Maintain paints finish to prevent damage or imperfections using the proper products, equipment and procedure for long lasting paint gloss.

I don't know, if you do interiors, write up a diddy on that too. Some dealers don't know what a "proper" detail is, maybe Blue Coral soap, wash rag, rinse, dry and thats it. I see a lot of cars in my area that are beautiful, until you see swirls and DISO's in the paint so bad and they still have the dealer plaque in the license plate frame. If/when I get my little side freak show going, I may put business cards on the windshield wipers at my local Walmart (just saw a nice Hemi 300C with baaaaad DISO on the paint).

            Good luck,

Your threads on the above cars look nice, I must have missed those in the past.

            Good job

              Re: Resume

I dunno about a resume, but a binder, with some good quality photo pics of your work before andafter would be a good idea to bring along.

Even just a good idea in general, can just sit it out at a car show, etc....

Here is there page on the dealers website

They aren't just "wash with terry cloths". "Keeler Pro Detail Department has well qualified, skilled highline professional Detailers- with over 30 years of combined experience."

I might be trying to get into something with a little more skill than I have.

It also looks like they use 3M products. Darn!

                      Re: Resume

I have been working on an "Extreme Makeover" '86 Mustang for a few weeks. The thought has occurred to me that an excellent advertising gimmick would be to run tape down the middle of the car and correct the paint and detail the interior on only half of the car.... Then put my business logo on it and use it as my daily driver.

It would be a dramatic "before and after" showcase of detailing/paint correction skills.

If you had such a car at your disposable maybe you could do the 50-50 detail job and drive it to the interview!

I think showing just how much you can improve a car is more powerful than simply showing up with a well-detailed car.

At a minimum bring a portfolio of your work.

                      Good luck!

Well, I have an interview tomorrow which doesn't give me much time to do anything. I'm going to print out those two threads in color and detail my grandmas car tonight and bring it in tomorrow. Unfortunately we don't have any crazy awesome sports cars I can detail to bring in tomorrow.

Yeah I agree in retrospect, however I was more thinking along the line that a car in person is even better than a portfolio. But a 50-50 car would be great!

Detail one panel then if you are in a time crunch. Just to give them an idea.
