Wow I'm glad none of you do business around here. You could shut down places with those prices. (assuming your services were up to par w/ theirs)
Here I thought my prices were low for the kind of work I do.

One thing you may consider is never have a SET price. Always say "$25 and up" because Joe Schmoe will pull up in his F-350 Dualie completely covered in mud inside and out, and expect ridiculous shine for his $25.
It's also not very fair for someone w/ a honda civic to pay the same price as someone with a denali, don't you think?

I'm in the same boat as you, never get paid, but they in return pay for pretty much everything for me. I see it as equal, but some people think it isn't right...

Looks like we were raised the exact same way, lol. I do all kinds of jobs around the house and outside. Heck, just taking care of our yard by myself saves us thousands each year. Sure, I could get paid for all the things I do, but if I had been getting all that cash through the years, I probably would've ended up blowing it like all of my friends do with their cash. IMO, the way my parents think is for the better. By me not having that kind of cash on hand to blow, it has actually taught me to be smarter with the money I do have. In return for all the things I've done through the years, my parents bought me a car when I turned 16. Fair deal IMO.

I have a lot of car washing/detailing stuff and equipment and I am lucky enough that my parents have paid for it of it because the majority of the work I do is on their cars. Some people think thats wrong, but it makes sense to me.

How would that be wrong? I'm also 16 and as of right now, I only detail my parent's cars and my own car. I never get paid for my work, but in return, my parents pay for all the tools and supplies I need for a full detail. Our vehicles never go to the car wash; that in itself saves us hundreds of dollars over the course of the year, which is how my parents justify paying for my supplies. I guess that's a different mentality than some people have, but in our family, we never get paid for helping out family.

I'm 16 and have what I would call a small car washing/detailing business, but really it isn't. Almost all my customers come from people that live by me, people that drive by and happen to stop and people that all those people recommend me to. I have a lot of car washing/detailing stuff and equipment and I am lucky enough that my parents have paid for it of it because the majority of the work I do is on their cars. Some people think thats wrong, but it makes sense to me. The cars that I do are mainly people that I know and they understand that I'm only 16 and they do take a risk in letting me do what ever it is (washing, waxing, claying, etc.) to their car. I have to take into consideration that I have no insurance if something were to go wrong, its a risk I take and a risk the customer takes. I'm also not trying to make a lifetime of savings doing this, just making a little money for things I want.

I think what I'm trying to say, is you have to take risks in life...start with those prices and adjust accordingly, if your coming out way over what you need/want and are getting a steady client base, then I guess your doing good. If your not making a lot but have a full schedule, that can't hurt either. You'll just have to start doing it and make some adjustments as you go.

Here is what I am going to be chargin this year.

Simple Wash, Tires and Windows = $25

Interior Cleaning, Vacuuming, NO SHAMPOO = $25

Wax = $25

Polish/Sealant $25

Engine Detail = $20

$25/hour for paint correction.

Where I'm from, you don't need a license to detail anything. You do need a sellers permit and collect sales tax. You should at least look into insurance, it only takes one annoyed person to ruin your finances for a long long time.

Umbrella policies are inexpensive, $ 200-300 a yr for min 1 million coverage

Business insurance about the same

Also make sure you have insurance on yourself, aka workmens comp, if you injure yourself while at someone's home or business.

Superior Shine, I know you mean well, and you are a whole lot more experienced than myself, so the input is appreciated. my reply may seem defensive, and I suppose it may be a little. I realize you are a busy man (36 buses would take forever), so the time you spend on the forum with us newbies speaks highly of your character.

I am 19 years old, I have no desire to EVER grow to the point of training. I am going to be working up to a job as a medical professional. I want training, only for my own car care

I don't care about license fees. are any (19 year old) baby sitters licensed? I make what she does +- a few bucks. I am also about as money orientated as your average neighborhood sitter. As far as taxes, they're illegal anyways.


I have paid for my stuff, with the $ i earn. I detailed my first car by hand, and went from there. my first post was entitled "financing my obsession through my obsession" . that sums up my overall detailing goals

Not stolen

- I do a job a week, the rest of the time is vacation

I don't care about collecting waste water. one car a week doesn't matter.
