  • Rotary or PC 7336?

    Hi,

I just got my new 06 black Mustang GT and it has some random fine scratches in the clear cote that are mainly noticable in the garage under the light. I thinking of purchasing a polisher, which one should I invest in? Will a PC 7336/7424 be good enough for every day fine scrathes and swirls on black clear cote paint?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Even if you find you need the rotary (pretty big "if") you oughta have the PC for follow-up work and other milder jobs. It's sorta like having different saws. Having a long-bar chainsaw (a rotary) to take down trees doesn't mean you shouldn't also have a small hand saw (the PC) for other jobs. Heh heh, which do you think you'll use more often

        Great analogy, Accumulator!

Good answer, as well. Get the PC. Used properly, it will handle that minor swirling and help you put on wax so much more evenly and easily than by hand.
See the big picture, enjoy the details

          Thanks for the replies!

I'm going to get the porter cable 7336 at Lowes for $109.00.

Not quite sure what the diffience is between the 7336 and the 7424, I think it may be the counter weight for 5" or 6" backing plate and pads.

Anyway I think I'll give the one at Lowes a try.

The 7336SP comes with a polishing pad and a sanding disc backing plate as well. So if you have any home woodworking projects that require sanding, you're set. As far as the polishing pad, all the posts I have read say DON"T use it on your car. I used it on my ceramic stove top. It looks brand new!

Like the others have said... get the PC from Lowes then order the DA Velcro Buffing System from Meguiars and you will be set! Easy to use, no learning curve like a rotary.

you are right about the only difference it the counter weight and maybe an accessory or two... They consider the 7336 a sander and the 7424 a polisher.

Yeah, I have both PC models and after years of switching counterweights/backing plates/etc. I can't tell them apart.

Oh, I prefer to use the 6" counterweight no matter with every size pad/backing plate. If yours comes with the 5" weight just order up part # 699933 (that's the PC number for the 6" weight).

I wouldn't say "no" learning curve, but not the same kind of learning curve. And getting really good with your technique using the PC/G100 will make transitioning to the rotary a few years down the road all that much easier. You'll already have the fundamentals of proper machine polishing down.
