  • newbie, please help! please

Hello, new to the board, but I have been reading through autopia for ~1 month. I have finally learnt true car care and detailing, and I really wanna do a detailing for my car.

well, my car is a white 97 mustang that has tons of swirls!!
I'm going to use the following in this sequence:

    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. Wash again
    4. # 83 with a random orbital buffer
    5. #82 with a random orbital buffer
    6. #7
    7. # 26 / NXT

Is this good enough to remove most of the swirl marks?

and is both #83 and #82 necessary? If not, I don't have to purchase both of them, since I'm planning to pick them up tomorrow in NAPA.

Do I need to use a random orbital buffer to apply #7 and #26?

One final question, after the wash, do I have to dry the car or not before I use the clay bar?

Well, tons of questions, but I just need help from you experts to put all the pieces of puzzle back together and I really appreciate that!

bg387 - thanks for your help.
And can you also answer my other questions please?

04kevinJ - "learnt" is actually same as "learned". I was just used to this from my country. I'll change that next time, hehe!

          Hi Jan...Welcome to MOL!

I don't think #83, or #82 will work well enough with an orbital (Unless you are referring to a PC) to remove any swirls...It takes a more aggressive machine to break down the diminishing abrasives in these two products.

I think you would be better off using
          MPPC with your orbital machine

One final question, after the wash, do I have to dry the car or not before I use the clay bar?
I would dry the car if it were me, because some have said their clay began to fall apart after soaking up water....Not right away, but eventually.

              You're welcome Jan!

I hope the MPPC does the trick.

                Hi jan_stang,

                Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

I'll second what Rusty Bumper just wrote, if you're referring to an old style Orbital Buffer that looks anything like these ones,

Then you probably won't get the cleaning ability your hoping for because these style's of orbital polishers are just not effective at removing defects out of clear coats because of their slow speed and larger surface area.

You'll want to step up to a Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher like the one being offered here, (hopefully next week).

We want to hear from you. Let us know if you have any suggestions or ideas for NEW products that you would like to see Meguiar's come out with.

                  I have this one:

I used to everthing by hand, until someone gave me this buffer for doing a free detail.

I was able to bring my detailing up a notch with this type of buffer...believe it or not.

                    Hi Rusty Bumper,

No doubt they work and do a better job than your hand, but they're not as vesatile as the PC.

Of course they do work pretty good for older single stage paints.

                      Right!

That large orbital vibrated pretty bad on vertical surfaces...To the point my back started to bother me.

Now that I think about it, I was using it when I blew out my lower (Back) disc!

The PC is so much easier to handle and to navigate the lower body panels of a car with.

                        Hey Mike,

THanks for the advice, but wish I have this kind of money to purchase this Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher. But will the offer be up until ~July? Cos' I'm planning on getting a part time job after my internship (which doesn't pay )

Besides, I'm just going to get the orbital for my personal use only (well, maybe some of my friends car?). You think it'll still worth to pay that much just for my old car? I mean, would there be a huge difference to use the Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher in comparasion to any orbitals for my white car? And keep in mind I'm in college and don't have a part time job right now!
Any advice and comments are welcome! Thanks

                          Hi jan_stang,

The below was all done by hand. If I can do it, you can do it too, just pour your heart into it.

                          *********************

Recently I detailed black 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe Coupe with a basecoat/Clear coat finish.

For this black 1947 Plymouth Coupe, I used,

                          * Meguiar's Quik Clay System - It had white over spray paint all over the finish
                          * ColorX
                          * NXT Tech Wax x 2

The results speak for themselves. The owner just about jumped out of his skin when he saw it for the first time after detailing it. Just by coincidence, he brought it by tonight and it still looks great.

                          Before

                          Before

White paint overspray all over the entire car

                          After

                          *********************

If you want to use the Orbital buffer you could try the ColorX or pick up a bottle of any of the below paint cleaners, they will all work with the Orbital Buffer,

Clear Coat Body Scrub Paint Cleaner

                          Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner

                          Hope this helps...

                            Oh my Goodness!

That car is beautiful!!! Such a drastic difference in before/after. Mike, can the clear coat body scrub be used in addition to Scratch-x? Would it provide any additional benefits? TIA.

Mike, I thank you from deep of my heart! You helped me a lot, and I have learned a lot from this forum. Thank you!

But just I last question, would I apply MPPC with the orbital just like everyone else with their PC? I've learned that from the meguiar's and some other websites. Thanks
