  • Removing hydrophobic coatings from glass

Hi - how are you guys removing the hydrophobic coating on glass?

You could probably try an IPA mix, like Megs surface prep. Or an alcohol from the pharmacy shelf. You could even get away with using Ultimate compound in the glass to clean it.

Hello, which specific product are you referring to, that you are trying to remove?

Hi Nick - I was actually just going to post the question - what are the different type of hydrophobic coatings? To answer your question - I'm not sure. I get a lot of cars in and out of my shop, window tint shop, that have these coatings on the interior of the glass.

It makes film stick to the glass, instead of sliding around. A lot of guys torch the coating off, but I don't like that idea. it also isn't friendly for doing back glass or windshields.

So my first part was what are the options for removal.

My next step will be applying a stronger hydrophobic coating to some glass, and testing the products I've gathered to see how removal goes. I'd prefer a product that I can spray on and also doubles as a glass cleaner. Am I wishful thinking? Maybe.... it's why I'm here. : )

So in addition to post one, I also would like to know of a good strong hydrophobic coating used on interior auto glass. For the purpose of applying and testing the removal products.

I agree. The forums were, and are the better platform in my personal opinion.

Sadly so many have looked to FB for their interactions. The wealth of archived information and conversations in all the foums can't be replaced.

                      Hi Pdx,

I would think that M205 on a microfiber finishing pad via Dual Action Machine, or, any of our pro compounds, would remove any glass coating on the exterior glass. There is no way to really test full removal however. Even a hydro phillic surface which does not bead water, is not an indication something has been fully removed.

We do not have a glass coating at this time.

Our Ultimate Glass Cleaner & Water Repellant is an awesome choice for exterior glass, you just use it like you would a regular glass cleaner and it provides ceramic based water beading. We do not recommend this for interior however.

                      Hope this helps.

Hi Nick - Everything I'm discussing is on the interior. Thanks though. Appreciate the response in any event.
