  • Matte black TRD wheel cleaning and protection

I’ve got some matte black Toyota TRD wheels and looking for advise on cleaning and detailing them. My concern is maintaining the matte finish and not damaging the paint at all.

My go to tire cleaner has always been APC. I know that’s pretty mild. Would you have any concerns about using that on the tires and wheels?

Also, what should I do about dressing? If I get any of it on the wheel it will look splotchy. The alternative is to coat the wheels completely with something but I have no idea what product that would be. I like the idea of coating them for some protection.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks!
It's only weird because it's not normal

I think Megs came out with a cleaner just for matte wheels, the products released for 2023. So it's brand new.

And I know there are the wheel coatings crowd, but there is also the spray crowd. With that, throw a coat of Hybrid Ceramic Wax liquid (yellow bottle) on them then after washing each wash spray then hose them with Hybrid Ceramic spray wax (blue bottle)

Our D101 All Purpose Cleaner is actually not as mild as you might think especially when it comes to cleaning wheels. We typically will always recommend using one of our dedicated wheel cleaners since they are designed & tested specifically for wheels. Our Hot Rims Black Wheel Cleaner would be a great option, new for this year. I will have a thread up soon, Pictures from our Thursday June 22nd, Open Garage Night showing some good before/after on week old brake dust. Our Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner is our most premium, most advanced technology package in our consumer line.

It would be beneficial to know more details around how the wheels are made and especially the coating, i.e. painted, clear coated, powder coated, etc. That said, the above two recommendations can be used on really any black wheel provided you follow the directions. Speaking of directions, always make sure to read the directions on the specific wheel cleaner you go with as directions can differ from one wheel cleaner to the next. Always work on one wheel at a time from start to finish when they are completely cooled down from driving, and ideally in the shade, spraying from the bottom up, always rinsing thoroughgoingly and using quality wheel brushes like our X1902 & X1901 Supreme Shine Wheel Brushes.
