I bought 2 chamios within the last month, they are giving off a foul smell and also leaving little fine particles like they are falling apart. And they have gotten stained and will not come clean. I rinse them out each time I use them, I've let them air dry, I've also tried leaving them in fresh water so that they don't dry out. What am I doing wrong? How can I prevent this from happening?
Any help would be much appreciated.

i wouldn't use a chamois, and would go for a quality waffle weave drying towel. with a chamois.... when you wipe down the car and you've missed a spot washing, you will drag dirt all around creating scratches/marring. waffle weaves have little pockets to absorb water and any particles better than a chamois would.

Are we taking about a real live (formerly) natural chamois?

Staining is normal, not a problem.

Remember, they're made from animal parts. Stuff will grow in them. Normally, when allowed to dry quickly (not necessarily and option in Florida) they don't smell too much.

Did you hang it, stretched flat, not wadded up, to dry?

i never believed in these special towels just to absorb water... in my opinion a quality terry cloth is the way to go.... quite decent water absorbancy, easy maintainance, last forever.... o and forgot to mention the best part of all.... theyre cheap

[thread highjack] Wow, blast from the past. I saw that in Jr. High School many years ago during one of our "movie days" It was ultimately cool to a 13 year old [/thread highjack]

Thanks for the input.. they are natural chamois' but again for some reason they're falling apart. I guess I should look at getting some terry cloth or some other drying towels I.L.O. chamois' they're not all they're cut out to be.

I have found the natural chamois to have a better "squeegee" type action to it and the synthetics are better at straight absorbtion, they 'blot dry' a lot better (try sticking a corner of a synthetic chamois in the sideview mirror and see all the water it 'pulls' out through capillary action)

                Hey,

Many years ago, I used a natural chamois, so I know the sour smell they have sometimes. The little wear particles are also normal. All you can do is throughly rinse it and allow it to air dry.

But to be very honest, I only use Meguiar's Waffle Weave microfiber drying towels. Meg's X-2000 Water Magnet will hold 3 times more water than terry cloth towels. Believe me, using these towels make a huge difference!

The staining is normal, but giving off pieces isn't...
