  • question on use of cleaner wax

I know the regular cleaner wax has some polishing/cleaning power.

I use it pretty regularly, I really like the results I get with it.

Typically I use it every other week if weather permits, with in between washings with a follow up of either nxt spray wax or the other spray wax.

What I am wondering is how abbrassive is the cleaning power of the cleaner wax. I know it isn't very abbrassive or as abbrassive as scratch x or color x. But could I be harming my paint by using it so regularly. As in shortening its lifespan.

I have tried other meguiars waxes, like gold class and nxt. On my paint I really didn't like the results of gold class, and I can see little or no difference between the results I was getting with nxt and cleaner wax, so as you can see my choice is cleaner wax as it is almost 1/3 less in cost.

I have recently used color x and was very impressed with the results out of that, but I figure that will be a seasonal use wax.

So is there anybody here who uses the cleaner wax (maroon bottle) all the time?

I know the meguiars saying is use what you like and use it often, but does that still apply with this?

    thanks

Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is one of the mildest products that Meguiars sells. It has no abrasives in it to my knowledge, and it perfectly safe to use on a regular basis.

It's an outstanding product for it's class.

I'd go so far as to say you could use cleaner wax every other day for 5 years and not harm your paint.

I'm trying the same thing with my daily driver. Using the cleaner/wax about every 3-4 weeks. So far it has been done twice and the next time due next weekend (although there is a public holiday coming up next Wednesday....).

I have been using ColorX on my daily driver, topped with Nxt, and I really like it.

Keep in mind that even though ColorX is abrasive, it is as abrasive as you make it. Worked in lightly with a foam applicator it is milder. Worked in hard with a terry cloth it is more abrasive. Worked in with a DA, it is very strong.

Also, depending on what else you do, definately give the car a claying. Improved my results dramaticaly.

            I love the cleaner wax.

Usually, i put cleaner wax on after every-other washing of my truck (about once every 2 weeks) and then do a full detail about once every 3 months.

Works great, looks great, keeps the water beading, and keeps protection up for little effort.

            Stevo.

              Just to chime in...

The abrasives used in all Meguiar's products are diminishing abrasives, not sharp, hard abrasives that could scratch your paint. As Mur1525 pointed out, our cleaner/waxes, to some degree are as aggressive as you make them in that how hard your work them is just as an important factor as the product itself.

Same goes for ScratchX. If you wipe it on lightly, it only cleans lightly. If you work it against the finish, you can remove scratches with it.

Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax in the maroon bottle is very light and gentle in its cleaning ability and is perfect for frequent use on a daily driver with no fear of ever removing too much paint and actually, none or very little paint at least not that you could measure. So with this product... wax on!

I have tried other Meguiar's waxes, like gold class and NXT. On my paint I really didn't like the results of gold class, and I can see little or no difference between the results I was getting with NXT and cleaner wax, so as you can see my choice is cleaner wax as it is almost 1/3 less in cost.
You car is silver correct? In this case you probably wouldn't see a difference, you might on a black car however. Truth be told, Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax leaves a very impressive finish on black paint, especially when compared to any other wax on the market for the price, not just Meguiar's waxes. It also beads water very well. At a suggested retail of $4.99 and available just about anywhere, it is truly a great value for the money and just one of the reasons it's been around since 1973

I know the Meguiar's saying is use what you like and use it often, but does that still apply with this?

              thanks
That's actually my recommendation and I stole it from a gentleman named Jack Anderson

”Find something you like and use it often”

If you find a product you like, then apparently the results look good in your eyes, if you use it often, then your finish will always look great. It's only when you begin to neglect or abuse the finish that it goes down hill.

Barry has something similar and that's,

"Frequent car care is easy car care"

Kind of the same thing said in different ways. The important thing is that you like the results your get and you enjoy using the product.

I love the results I get with Cleaner Wax, very nice deep wet look, but I have noticed that after waxing the car, the pad has some pinkish hue to it (red SS paint)...I guess SS paints are a whole other thing!

                  That's normal for SS paint.

Actually, it's normal for clear coat too, but you can't see it on the pad.

I'll add that some people make a point of looking for a wax with no abrasives or cleaning power, and they can find those with Meg's #26, #16 (while it lasts) and Deep Crystal step 3. But I'm getting better results from the waxes with slight cleaning ability (GC, NXT, and #21[veryslight]), and from the cleaner waxes. I only go with the "pure" waxes when I'm prepping for a display, when I want to pull peoples eyes out.

I like that "Frequent car care is easy car care." How true. And cleaner waxes are a great choice for frequent, easy car care of a daily driver. I'm more likely to wax every couple weeks with a cleaner wax than I am to pull out the clay bar, 5 bottles and the machines and pads every 2 weeks, or even once a month any more. The cleaner wax, with proper wash technique, is a perfect choice for controlling swirls and preventing contaminant buildup.

Thats what I always said. Cleaner wax keeps the paint clean with no wax build up.

                        yeah but,,,

when you use the megs cleaner/wax every week, or every other week, arent you just cleaning off the prior layer of wax that was there already, and in good shape???

or are you actually adding to the car's existing layer of wax??

if so, maybe after you have used the cleaner wax, maybe just use the DC3 from then on,,,say 2,3 months.

What you are doing when you use a cleaner wax is you are cleaning minor contaminants that are stuck to the paint, you are adding some polishing for gloss, and you are adding a layer of protection.

As you wash your car, you are creating swirl marks. It's inevitable, no matter how good your technique. By using a cleaner wax frequently, you control swirl buildup. The cleaners aren't strong enough to remove swirl marks, but they will slow down and delay their appearance.

When I had my car in the garage it was a lot easier to keep clean and cared for, and I could go the whole summer on regular applications of #26 or NXT. I didn't have to clay for 3 years. But circumstances change, and my garage queen gets 350 miles a week now and is parked outside 24/7. I have to wash it more often, and it's far dirtier now when I wash it than it used to be. Cleaner wax is the only convenient and time effective way for me to keep on top of it, to keep it near the standard I set for myself.

So, it's a circumstance thing. Under these circumstnaces it's not so much a matter of applying and erasing protection, it's a matter of controlling the swirls and maintaining the protection. The cleaner wax won't remove the swirls, but it will slow down the rate at which they appear. Eventually (soon) I'll have to get out the clay and the machines and the 5 bottles.
