  • Help with Removing Paint Transfer

i know this will tough to advise on but anything you can do to help would be appreciated. OK driving along when a van kicks up a 6x6 sheet of some very thin plywood (almost looked like cardboard) one side of the cardboard was painted white. Along the very most forward edge of the front bumper the wood must have scraped and now the very edge has a layer of that white paint on it. I cant scrape it off with my fingernail so it's on there pretty good. I know this front edge of the bumper is where most pros say to take it easy because it has the thinnest layer of paint.

    in my arsenal:

    a. PC DA
    b. chicago electric rotary
    c. complete line of sonus pads
    d. meg's med cut cleaner
    e. meg's fine cut cleaner
    f. meg's swirl remover
    g. meg's #83 & #80
    h. turtle wax rubbing compound (clay looking red in a can)
    i. SSR 2.0
    j. AIO

any suggestions on where to start and what tool to use????

    THX

I removed some transfered paint by using MPPC (discontinued). You can use DC1 if you can't find it. Use a soft cotton terry cloth. You will have more bite with that than a foam applicator. See my post

        • * Get yourself a peice of terry cloth from a bath towel, (yes, cut up a bath towel), you need the nap terry cloth offers for this.
          * Next, shake your bottle of M01 Medium Cut Cleaner up very well.
          * Pour some onto the piece of terry cloth and then rub this onto the affect area
          * Put some passion behind the pad

This should be aggressive enough to remove the white paint that has transferred onto your car's finish.

Afterwards, use your dual action polisher, with a Sonus polishing pad, speed setting 5.0 with either some M83 or M80 to remove any dullness or micro-marring instilled by the M01 applied by hand and restore the clarity and gloss, apply wax after this step.

Excellent, i will try that deal with the med cut. I only use terry towels on my car - never jumped on the MF band wagon. I was a little hesitant to use the med cut because just in rubbing a little between my fingers I was able to feel how abrasive it was and i didnt want to make it worse.

          Thanks again.

ps. I also have the 2 types of meg's clay bars should i have a go at it with those?

Fro removing things like paint transferred onto paint, you usually need something aggressive enough to abrade it off.

The M01 is pretty aggressive and not for use for working on clear coats by hand. That said, you need something aggressive enough to abrade this transferred paint off. Thus the reason I suggested that the finish may be dull or hazy after use and to re-polish the area by machine using a product that is safe for use on clear coats.

You can try the clay bars, but for things like this, a piece of terry cloth the right chemical and some passion behind the pad is usually very effective. Not always, but usually. Safety also has to be considered.
