  • I must really be doing something wrong.

Today I decided to detail our black CRV. I washed and clayed and cleaned/polished with #80 and a polishing pad. I decided to see what #81 would add to the look I get from #80. It didn't take long before I was wishing I wasn't curious what #81 looked like. I put a small amount on a foam pad and started to apply it. I made about 4 circles with it and it turned to gum and didn't want to spread anymore. I kept trying to spread it out and work it in, but all it did was get gummier. So I tried to wipe off what I had on the paint. That didn't work either, it just left smears that would not wipe off. So I thought that maybe it needs to sit for a while. So I left it sit and came back to it and it still would not wipe off. The only way I got it to come off of the paint was to grab my #80 and a foam pad and reclean the area I had tried #81 on. So then I got a brand new pad and shook the bottle to with in an inch of its life and applied just a drop to the pad. I was thinking maybe I used too much or my pad was not as clean as I thought it was. I had the same results and ended up applying #80 again to get off the smears and streaks left behind by #81. So I grabbed another brand of polish and applied that to see if I would have the same trouble, but it went on and off easy with no problams at all.
The temp was 75 deg with low humidity and I was inside of a garage, so sunlight was not a factor.
So my question is, what am I doing wrong? I can't believe that this is normal for #81. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Only time I have problems with #81 is when I leave it sit to long or use to much product. Sounds like you used a small amount... you DO NOT want to let it dry or you will have problems removing it. It is a great product and gives great results.

Apply a small area 2x2 then wipe off.

I am sure others will chime in with their thoughts.

I've had some problems applying #81 with a DA polisher, but not by the same hand method that you just mentioned........I'm thinking that you might have a bad batch.

When I apply #81 by hand, I try to apply it like I would a wax and not try to work it in that much. I then remove it from the panel I'm working on before moving on to the next one.

But it sounds like you are doing it right to me, so I think you might have a bad bottle.

Have you tried it on another car's finish?

Thanks for the answers. I was trying this in a small area, about 1/4 of the hood or less and using a small amount (just a drop on the pad). It immediately turns gummy and seems to glue itself to the surface, the only way I can remove it is to use a paint cleaner and I did try wiping it off right away. I even tried gently using my fingernail to get it off and that didn't work either. I have applied #16 to thick and left it on too long and it came off easier than this (anyone whoever has done this knows how much work this involves.) I figured that thier must be some sort of application method that I am unaware of for applying #81.

I will have to try some QD next time. After I recleaned the area with #80 I put on 2 coats of NXT Paste (pretty good stuff by the way) and it looks too good right now to risk messing it up again.
          Thanks for the help

Did you shake the bottle up well before pouring some out?

Good point. When a product directions say "shake well" is it more important to shake it for a long period of time, or to shake it vigorously? I have always wondered about this.

I shook the bottle within an inch of its life for a long time, wanting to make sure that it was mixed well.

At first I tried about a dime sized amount on the pad. It very quickly became gummy and acted like glue on the paint. I thought that maybe I was using too much product and too large of an area, so I tried a smaller amount yet with the intention of starting to spread it out over a small area and spread it thin. But again it gummed up right away and glued itself to the paint. It simply would not wipe off. I induced marring wiping so hard trying to get it off with no luck. I ended up going over the section again with #80 to get the polish off and clean up the marring. Thats when I gave up and and decided #80 looks good enuff and started applying some NXT paste, which worked quite well.
I can apply #16 to the whole car, walk away, come back some time later and still wipes off with ease. I thought using #81 was going to be easy.

Well for the majority of the population, using M81 Hand Polish is very easy, your experience is the exception, not the norm.

It sound to me as though you're not using enough product? It's really quite simple, pour some onto your applicator pad, spread it out over the finish, wipe it off using a plush terry cloth towel or a microfiber polishing cloth. Anything with a nap will help to remove it off the surface.

Also, pure polishes like the M81 don't need to dry and shouldn't be allowed to dry as this will make it difficult to remove them.

                      Apply polish
                      Work in
                      Wipe off
                      Move to new section

Thanks Mike. I have always read that when you have streaks it is because you use too much product, so I kept applying less, when I should have been applying more.
                        Thanks

I want to aplogize for my above comment on #81 not being easy to use. It is my application method that is the problam not the product. It is a comment that never should have been made and I am sorry.

I have not had the chance to try using it again. Meguiars makes quality products. I am sure that it is me doing something wrong.
