  • cool white jetta, need help

i recentlt acquired a prtty cool car, 01 wolfsburg jetta...
heres the deal, it has some bad spiderwebs....no scratches, just looks like someone didnt know how to wash.....

    heres what i did,

    wash w/ deep crystal
    qd and clay
    mf wipe
    cleaner/polish wax
    nxt paste

there are still some swirls but not as bad...what should i do....im debating on reclaying the car and sarting from step one....but unsure.....i hear the nxt is a pain to remove.....i am not opposed to another long day of detailing though, ill post pics soon, it does look nice, except for mainly the doors.....bah...seems like 4 hours wasted....

Are you working by hand or machine?
Do you have any pictures of the spider webbing?
What other products do you have?

As to NXT being tough to remove, I have not had this problem.

      well

      update on what i did

      wash-deep crystal and bug sponge
      diaper cloth next
      mf towel to finish
      clay- megs qd and clay
cleaner- dc1 paint cleaner- applied w/buffer, removed w/buffer
      wash- nxt paste

i used a craftsman random orbit 10" buffer.....not what most of you guys use, but it serves its purpose.....

the spider webbing is greatly reduced, but i would like to get it all....and if that means redoing it all and spending a hundred bucks on stuff, its all good, cuz its not a waste if it s meguiars...

the craftsman random orbit 10" buffer is not something that really works.. its too big , clunky, slow , and in the end, doesn't end up getting in the paint. you will need a rotary buffer or a porter cable such as meguiars g100a. the g100a will be something easier to use, less heavy, and in my opinion better ( i use a rotary ) once and if you get that, you should use some #80 speed glaze and apply it without using much force on the g100 and after the second pass, the swirls will most likely be gone

Try #80 with your orbital....You'll have to make a few passes with it, but #80 should make for some improvements.

If your willing to spend that much, then the G100 would be the tool of choice for #80, and it also opens up more options for more products to try........Not to mention the great looking finish you can create with the G100.

            A critique of your process.
            Wash
I would use a wool mitt as opposed to the sponge. When purchasing a wool mitt look for the softest available by feeling for the softest.

            Clay:
If the surface is smooth feeling, than skip this step.

            Cleaner:
Use DC1 by hand with foam applicator. The bonnet for the 10" buffer my be the cause of the spider webbing. Remove residue with a MF towel.

            Scratch removal:
Use Scratch X by hand with a foam applicator and remove residue with a MF towel.

            Polish:
DC step 2 or #7 by hand with a foam applicator and remove residue with a 100% cotton towel. The Ultra Plush super terry towel is a good choice.

            Wax
NXT and remove residue with a MF towel.

These products are available from Meguiar's website or from Pepboys or other auto parts stores.

Before making a big investment try the above OTC products.

Not a bad idea, but if you can find one then a stretch foam bonnet for your buffer should work ok.

Meguiar's has this item in their new magazine that was just recently issued.......(X4008)

And they also have a microfiber bonnet for 10" buffers.....(X4009)

I did not know Meguiars made products for store bought orbitals, but this seems logical.

I've used stretch over foam bonnets before and I liked them ok for what they are.

I used to do everthing by hand, until a friend bought a 9" orbital for me as a gift for detailing his van. I thought it was junk until I tried it for the 1st time.......I was able to work in the product a little better, and I was able to see results that I'd never seen before by hand alone.

Until I was introduced to Mr. G100.

well....that 90 day guarantee will be taken advantage of as i return the craftsman and buy the g100....why horse around when i can do it right....plus, after people seeing my car today, they want to pay me to do theirs.....and i think mine needs improvement....

                    perhaps a little more suggestion?

                    maybe wash
                    wool and mf
                    clay if needed
                    dc1 paint cleaner
                    dc2 polish
                    wax
                    wait a day wax

should i toss scratch x or #80 in there?

and what would be a good started kit to get? by kti i mean bunch of stuff to buy?

Meguiars has a variety of kits that are available with the G100.

Call 1-800-347-5700 and ask them to fix you up with a kit that includes #80, and ScratchX too if possible........I can't guarantee that these products will be added as part of a kit, but I would buy them anyway.........Especially #80.

They also sell a pad kit WDAV99B for about $25.00 that you will need too, and make sure that you get a velcro backing plate for your G100.....(The backing plate may be part of the kit, but I'm not sure of this)

                            orionz06,

Make sure you get the W-DAV99 Dual Action Velcro Buffing System (not sure if you get these in the kit you were talking about ordering - if not it will definately come in handy). This includes two Buffing pads (W-8006) and one Polishing pad (W-9006) as well as backing plate with velcro so it makes switching pads a breeze.

You will want to make sure that you keep a dedicated pad for each product that you are going to be using (i.e. 1 pad for #80, 1 pad for NXT, etc.) A great suggestion from the forum is to write the product name on the back of the pad with a black sharpie so you don't get them mixed up.

Here is a great article by Mike Phillips on some basics (I won't even try to paraphrase). He details out the process and it is definately worth the read.

I'm new here but have been a long time user and car guy. I'm pretty meticulous with my cars and have used Meguiars products buy hand for years. Recently we bought a 2002 Black Benz in need of some seriuos TLC. The previous owner must have only used gas station car washes, because the paint had major swirl marks and looked more

If you still have some questions after reading the article feel free to ask away.

so maybe a burgundy pad or yellow for like an 80 or speed glaze, and a beige for the wax...?
