  • Can ultra plush wash mitt cause scratches?

I just detailed my car last week , a black Audi. Today I washed my car with a new ultra plush wash mitt and dried it with water magnet towel. When I drove in the sunlight, i saw long scratches everywhere. I didn't use two bucket system though. But can wash mitt cause long scratches? ( I just don' t think water magnet towel can)
Any suggestion of proper use of wash mitt?

Was this your first time using either of those products? How clean were they? Any bits of dirt or grime that you could see? Remember, there can be things you can't see hiding in the piles of things waiting to scratch your car up.

I make sure to wash my towels and wash mitt every time I use them in the washing machine with some of my car wash. It's a great safety precaution.

I got one of these too. I have not used it, and will not be using it. It's clearly not natural material. I'm not going to risk it.

I also got the Microfiber Super Suede drying towel not realizing it's a chamois, not a Microfiber. I won't be using this either.

While it's possible these kinds of things can be used with no problem, they are certainly riskier than other tools. It's a heck of a lot harder to remove swirls than to instill them, so I will pass on taking chances.

That said, how much soap, how much soapy water you keep in the mitt, how big an area to try to wash at once, if you exert any pressure, etc, will all contribute to swirling your vehicle while washing. There is no magic wash mitt that can prevent it without other good techniques used as well.

The mit, alone, should not cause scratches. The scratches generally occur from contaminants that get into the mit or contaminants that are already on the paint, which are moved around by the washing process. If you ever drop a mit on the ground, it will pick up all kinds of debris that could scratch the paint. Same thing with the drying towel. Black paint leaves little margin for error.
