Body shop said they put 2 coats of wax on my new paint. HELP.

New paint was applied on several areas of my car after a wreck, and when I picked it up from the body shop they said they put two coats of wax on my car. When I later learned that this is a big no-no because they paint can't properly cure or release fumes, I freaked out. I can still smell paint fumes coming off the car 3 days after I picked it up. If I can smell paint fumes, would it be possible that they just used polish and not wax?

I haven't done anything to try to remove the "wax" yet. What would be the safest product to remove wax from a new paint job?

Welcome to MOL.

Ask the bodyshop if they did put a wax on it or if they put a glaze on it.

A light polish will remove it like ultimate polish.

If you are looking for protection that is fresh paint safe, M305 would be it. Here's a good thread on it.

Would that ultimate polish work better than a clay bar to remove the wax? Or is a clay bar not safe for fresh paint?

A clay bar won't remove a wax. The only true way to remove it is to mechanically abrade it off the surface with a polish or compound. You could try IPA but I would not take any chemicals to new paint. Just me being OCD.

Ok thanks. What would you use to apply the polish? Would a microfiber cloth work best, or a sponge? I don't have a mechanical applicator.

I was reading the instructions on that ultimate polish, and it says to not let it dry. What will happen if it dries?

It will give you a headache lol. A few passes on a foam applicator is all you need. Wipe off immediately. If it gets dry go over the area again with the foam applicator. Like removes like. A quick detailer will also work but the one in the maroon bottle not ultimate quik detailer as that leaves protection behind.

It may not remove all the wax, but it will remove at least some wax, just to clarify for the new guys. I'd confirm with the body shop exactly what they put on the paint, to start. If I was to use a product to remove wax off of fresh paint, I'd stick with a body shop safe product like M82.

Just to clarify. It doesn't need to be body shop safe once it leaves the shop. It only needs to be body shop safe when it is in the actual body shop environment.

We are often asked if a particular product is safe to use in a body shop environment, or even what that means in the first place. "Body Shop Safe" or "Paintable" refers to whether or not a product contains anything that might interfere with the painting process in a body shop. Some ingredients can cause real problems if used where paint is being sprayed, but are otherwise harmless. Certain silicones and other ingredients that are used to enhance one characteristic or another of a product, or make a product easier to use, should not be used in a body shop environment. This reference chart will tell you if a Meguiar's product is suitable for your body shop environment.

For the general consumer or professional detailer these ingredients are really of no consequence whatsoever.

I really doubt they put any wax on it, but if they did, it was on the areas they didn't paint, so as to match the finished look. I wouldn't do anything to the paint for a month or two, other than washing as needed and/or perhaps a spray cleaning with QW or UWWA (neither of which can "seal" the paint). So, I think this is a non-issue.

On fresh paint especially, yes, I would too. It was more to drive the point that you aren't adding, or not removing, any wax when claying as some are under the assumption it won't remove wax. Completely relevant to what's being talked about in this thread? No. A point to make? Sure.

I also understand it doesn't need to be "body shop safe" after it has been completely painted. The idea behind no wax for 30/60/90 days is the paint shouldn't be sealed. Body shop safe/"paintable" products fit this category.

As as for the Ultimate Polish being talked about, I defer to this post that I based my recommendation on:

While UP is most likely perfectly safe to use, we really do suggest sticking with a body shop safe product during these initial few weeks following the respray. M07 Show Car Glaze is a great choice for right now. No, it won't remove any of the fine swirls you have but it may help to conceal them quite well. Once that paint is cured you can go to work on fully removing the swirls. Of course, you could use a different body shop safe product like M80 or M83 for swirl removal now if you like. After all, the body shop has already buffed it to some level with similar products, so further refining on your part is certainly an option.

But whether or not you want to go out and buy some new products to use during this curing time is up to you.

Just wanted to point out here that we would recommend staying away from any our of our products with wax in them, even products like Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere & Ultimate Quik Wax which have quite durable polymer protection.
