  • Holograms - need advice ASAP!

    Hey all!

I am about to go attempt to remove what appears to be holograms in the paint of my black metallic Nissan Rogue. Can I use Swirl-X as a stand alone polish? It appears that my attempt to wax the car last week with Megs Color-X added many more holograms in the paint.

I have used UC on the paint to remove a deep defect, but had to use Scratch X 2.0 to remove the haze. This paint is definitely soft. Will Swirl-X most likely remove this, or do I need to go with something more aggressive and then move my way down to a milder polish?

    I really need some help!

    Thanks!

My car's paint is soft like yours; I get the same haze when I use UC. If ScratchX makes your paint glossy and wax ready after using UC it most definitely should get rid of the holograms. My car's paint is so soft even ScratchX makes it hazy and I have to use UP to leave it wax ready.

It sounds like the paint is either on the soft side or that you may have revealed the true finish of the car.

New cars can come with some pretty sever defects. This is known as DISO (Dealer Installed Swirl Option). Mike Phillips has an article on this.

Seeing as you are working by hand this is a good article to read.

Just so you know working by hand is very hard. One can only do so much by hand. You will be able to make the paint look better. A dual action polisher will yield much better results.

I would definitely recommend picking up the ultimate trio (ultimate compound, polish and wax). These are all great product.

Pictures would be great, to know if we're really talking about holograms, and what kind of holograms. In your other thread, you're talking about swirls, which are not the same thing at all. Holograms are usually "buffer trails", or what I've called "wipe holograms". The latter are very easy to remove (clean rag), while the former are extremely elusive. I'd also be surprised if any newer paint today is actually soft, so it might help to know what exactly has been used to come up with a "soft" conclusion. I can make my paint haze with UC, ScratchX and others, and it's extremely hard paint. Again, a picture might help to know what we're talking about.

I would, but it appears that I managed to get them all out with Swirl-X.

Also, what is the advantage of traditional wax over true spray wax? Will both serve the same purpose?

Technically, they're both pretty much the same - temporary protection. Using a traditional wax with a DA or by hand allows us to get that last bit of correction and lay down a protection layer. As the car gets dirty and needs to be cleaned, we use spray wax to replace, layer, or "boost" the protection, and it's good to match the spray to the traditional as much as possible to maintain the look. This means we can go months without having to re-wax traditionally, and all during that time, there is a fresh coating of wax every few days. This goes for so-called "sealants" and coatings as well, which are hype, anyway - there is nothing you can put on the paint to prevent having to wash or waterless wash, detail, and re-protect. Over time, swirls will build up no matter what you do, so when you get the chance, it will be time to re-wax with the DA or by hand.

              Hi JMan136,

Curious, what type of accessory were you using to apply & remove the ColorX and also can you explain how you were applying the product? When working by hand, the accessories used to apply & remove, along with technique, can make a big impact in your results. We have found it is best to apply with a soft foam applicator pad like our X3070 and remove with a microfiber towel, like our X2020 Supreme Shine.

Meguiar's recommend using one of our liquid or paste, carnauba based or synthetic based protectant options at least 3 - 4 times a year. Carnauba based waxes have been around for decades and offer good protection. Our full Synthetic Polymer based protectants will offer superior protection, durability, and longevity, when comparing to our carnauba based options. The use of a spray wax will significantly extend the life of your original wax coating. They are most often used after a washing of the vehicle, when it is clean.
