  • Bone-headed mistake - how can I remove Meguiar's Ultimate Pre-Wax Glaze

I guess I will file this away as one of the stupidest things I've done to the exterior of my car.

I have a 2003 jet black cobra that I pulled out of the garage Friday to get ready for the weekend's cruising. My wife picked up a bottle of Meguiar's Ultimate Polish pre-waxing glaze a few months back so I decided to give it a try. I've been using Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax for quite awhile and without even thinking, I started applying the pre-wax in the same manner I would their liquid wax.

It wasn't until I had completely covered the car and started to buff out the pre-wax that I discovered that something was NOT right... the pre-wax was a PAIN to buff off and not coming completely off. What is going on!!?? I looked at the instructions... apply in small areas and DO NOT LET DRY! Holy cow.... I could not believe it and my car is covered. I switched to Meguiars products a few years ago and had yet to come across one that I didn't apply to the whole car first and let dry. I didn't even think to read if the pre-wax glaze would be different. To be clear, I am not blaming Meguiars... it's still a great product, I just need to read.

So as you can imagine, I am not able to buff out all the wax and now I have a lot of cloudy pre-wax swirls baked into the black paint that looks hideous in the sun. I re-applied some pre-wax to an inconspicuous area and tried re-buffing it out (without letting it dry) but it seemed to make the problem worse. I tried some light dawn dishsoap and warm water in a small area and that didn't seem to help either, so I am looking to see if Meguiar (or someone) makes something that would be able to strip out the pre-wax and allow me to start over. I looked at the selection of clean/prep products, but didn't want to jump into rubbing compounds without at least asking some of the pro's here.

Thanks for reading, and happy fourth!

Try some quick detailer..see if it breaks down what dried..If that won't work..maybe some diluted rubbing alcohol (1:1 with water)?

Interesting. The polish is usually just more difficult to remove if it dries, not impossible. Have you tried washing the car, to get a good flow of water on it to try an remoisten the polish? Clay bar perhaps?

I looked at the quick detailer... description included keeping a waxed car looking waxed, so not sure if it is designed to break down the wax. I'll try some rubbing alcohol as I have that on hand... is the 1:1 assuming 91% or 70% isopropyl?

Most came off... but what didn't sticks out like a cloudy sore thumb on that black. I haven't rewashed, but I did wash a small area with Dawn and warm water to see if it would break down the polish and it didn't do anything. Clay bar or maybe the rubbing compound. stinks though... the clear coat has never seen anything "harsh" but wax and shampoo and is still like glass. Very apprehensive to start applying anything more but going to have to do something.

Not that it helps now but some Car Pro Eraser would (well hopefully) remove it and also give the paint a cleaner substrate for the ULW to adhere.
Eraser is an intense oil and polish remover. Off hand I am not sure of the same type of Meguiars product.
Maybe mineral spirits or IPA would work. It won't harm the paint and is worth a try.

Second option would be a DA repolish with Ultimate polish then apply ULW.
After trying to remove a product that has set, I would think there might be some swirls induced with the aggressive removal

We are surprised you are having such trouble removing the Ultimate Polish and apologize to hear about the experience as well. Have you tried to just apply a regular coat of wax over the surface? Or a Cleaner/Wax?

No, haven't applied any more wax... I attempted to reapply some of the glaze back over an area and no better. Can you recommend a cleaner I should try?

Product removes product. Start re-applying the product per the instructions and that should work.

                    Exactly.

Occasionally, even wiping immediately after working the product in, it will leave a "deposit" on the paint. When this happens I simply go over it again which reactivates the formula, and allows for easy removal.

To help avoid that, make sure the bottle is well shaken before using.
