Hi guys...New here but used to post in the uk forum.

I really am an amature/hobby type with machine polishing. I only really fully detail a car when I first buy it, and then probably yearly after that. So im still stuck with a few things, even though I've been doing it a number of years.

My latest car is a sapphire black bmw x6 and I'm having trouble with very faint holograms (I have seen worse on other cars, but I am being very OCD about the light ones I have)

I did all the usual paint prep..... foam, tfr, wash, tar remover, ironX, clay.

I then used the burgandy pad with 105 on the rotary nice and slowly on a low/medium speed, with light pressure. Then upped the machine speed to medium and increased arm speed to finish. Up/down...side/side in a 2ft square at a time

Next I switched to the megs DA and went over it with yellow pad and 205. Same technique used as rotary but polished on 3-4 slowly, then lightened pressure and sped up to 5-6 with a faster arm speed.

Then I washed/dried the car and waxed using ultimate wax. Then to be completely anal I used a detailing spray to get a great glass finish. It looks beautiful in the shade but sunshine does show a few downwards holograms

I always understood that not breaking down the compound properly causes holograms, so I pretty much take 2-3 hours from cut to finish just on one door. Am I over working? When is it best to stop polishing and micro towel off the residue? I do sometimes think there is residue left , but it's just light condensation from heat.

I must admit that it's always vexed me as to when the compound is fully broken down and when to stop. I guess stop too early and stop too late are just as bad as each other? This is why I go over with the 205 and DA after the cut.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for reading

Try switching to a higher speed on your DA with M205 with slower arm movement instead of starting at low speed.

So are you causing the holograms with your M105 / burgundy / rotary combination, or were they there before?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I think what Guz said is a great tip, and as far as not breaking down the compound shouldn't really be an issue with M105 and M205 as they use SMAT (super micro abrasive technology) and they cut consistently during the polishing cycle. Also it's possible that you may be "dry buffing", make sure there's a light film when you finish your polishing cycle to avoid dry buffing. hopefully the masters will chime in.
          Good luck!

Tbh davey I'm not sure. I just got the car and hadn't seen it in sunlight. The bmw (it's a used car )garage I bought it said they had mopped it before they sold to me but even under cloudy conditions I could see that absolutely no time was taken on the car

Thanks for the advice aztec 😊

I am NOT a professional detailer. A hobby person like you. 2-3 hrs on a single door seems like a long time. Maybe over finishing as you suggested? Not sure. Just a suggestion.

                Re: holigrams

Our SMAT abrasive products are non diminishing abrasives, they do not break down like our older DAT diminishing abrasive products. Holograms inflicted from a foam pad are typically harder to remove than holograms inflicted from a wool pad. We would suggest using M105 on your DA to remove the holograms if you can't get the paint to finish hologram free with your rotary, and then follow with M205 on your DA. M105 used on our DA has plenty of ability to remove a hologram.

We hope this information was helpful. Feel free to post further questions.
