    I just bought a black Corolla that is two years old. It's Toyota certified. Good car. It was a lease vehicle. I don't think anybody ever waxed it. The clear coat has taken a beating. I can see it is strong though. This is so bad, I didn't even notice the flakes of green/silver to create the Black Pearl look until I had the car a week.
    I wasn't looking for a black car. Got a good deal on it. Dealership did a lousy job of detailing. There are no good detailers here. I have to address this myself. I want to address it myself.

    On doing parts of the car at a time. This is interesting to me. I almost died ten years ago. Rehabilitated myself well. But a year ago Jan. I had a bad fall on wet ice. I'm good at falling. But this one took me by surprise. My spine twisted in the fall. I've worked through a whole bunch. Keep getting better, slowly. I'm at a point now that I can't walk very far without severe fatigue. I am getting better. Taken a year and all my knowledge in rehabilitation. I'm thinking I may be wise to do parts of this car at a time. Don't go getting fatigued and doing a less than good job on it. Maybe I'm just looking for reassurance that I can do as good a job, parts at a time, as I can doing each step completely.

    I am going to go through a deep compound polish. Then light compound polish. Then sealer/polish. Then the UWP. Then using X-wax spray on to maintain often.

    I never owned a DA polisher before. I have a couple rather naive questions. I'd like opinions.
    Do I really need to tape off the headlights? Tape off anything else?
    .... on the deep compound polish...am using a orange pad... I know it's on the light side of compounding. Can I just be careful and if I do slip a little. Not have to worry about scratching the plastic headlight lenses? Should I really be careful and use tape? If so.... would I need the tape beyond the two compounding steps? ... the second lighter compound...I'm using a light blue ultra light finish pad... same light blue pad to sealer/polish and wax.

    Does anybody have any thoughts on using a DA polisher to take off any of this? When it dries? Or just stick with a microfiber towel to take compound/polish/wax off?

    On the big plastic and carbon fiber grill on this car. Should I clay that? Is there any need to try to compound it? I though I would just use the spray on X-wax on it. And that's all?

    May sound like dumb questions. I'd just like to know opinions and specifics. I'd take the conservative side on any of this if restricted to my own thinking.

    My apologies to Meguiars for not going 100% complete Meguiars products. I do, however, use much of Meguiars. It is dominant in my detailing.

    Well, first I'm glad you're still detailing.

    But what are the actual defects? How bad is it?

    And what are your goals?

    A nice shine we can do easy..., and not push Health..... a show car takes more work....I

      When compounding and polishing, it is a good idea to tape of any part of the car in danger of being burned, such as raised body lines, or that could be stained by compound or polish such as edges, trim, emblems and especially any plastic surfaces. You also will want to cover the wipers and any air intake flows in front of the windshield. Getting the splatter off from compound/polish after the fact is a PIA. Of course, it is up to you if you want to take the chance.

      A good quality microfiber cloth is the easiest way to remove compound or polish; wipe after each section you complete. I like to take wax of by hand as well using a microfiber rather than a DA with a microfiber bonnet.

        Myrr.... I just basically want it to be a clean, stand up car. I ain't looking for no show quality. Although, realizing that pearl is in the black paint, has me goofing up and thinking a little obsessive. I knew black wouldn't be easy to take care of. I just want to take care of the car.
        Doesn't really have defects. Just wear. It has tons of swirls, or another term is spyder webs. Those tiny scratches that appear round. I have to get rid of them. Put a good finish on this car. Otherwise the finish ain't gonna last.
        I do have some small scratches. Also one place I notice overspray. I figured....good...that will stop me from becomming obsessive. I won't do anything about them. I'm also realizing I may do some correcting on both of those without trying.

        Right now, people will say it looks like a new car. Say it looks nice. They miss half of what the paint is supposed to look like.
        This car doesn't even have allow wheels. Steel and hubcaps. I like it that way. Still, they're 16 inch and 55 series tires.
        I have already decided what I'm going to do on it. Get the finish in the new car shape it should be in.
