  • Tire cleaning issue.

Ok to start, my tires were bought new on 08/2015 and they have only had Hyper Dressing applied to them. The issue I am having is I use D108 mixed approximately at 4 to 1, and I am still seeing lots of residue/dirt when I wipe off the tires. So here is how I clean the tires, spray them down with D108 let them sit for approximately 1 min, then scrub with a stiff bristle tire brush from a small bucket of Gold Class car wash and rinse spending about 2mins scrubbing each tire. After I finish cleaning my truck I wipe dry the wheels and then before applying Hyper Dressing I wipe down the tires with a dry micro fiber towel and this is where I see dirt and black residue. To my understanding Hyper Dressing is water based so there should be no real residue of it after spraying down the tires with D108 and scrubbing them. However I see this every time I clean my truck. My tires do still look great after each cleaning however I just don't want to end up with a large buildup of gunk and etc turning the tires brown and ugly.

Is there something I should try differently in my cleaning method, or a different cleaner I should try?

Here is what my truck looks like after a typical cleaning each week.

Your technique sounds good. I usually scrub the tires multiple times until I see white suds prior to moving on to the next tire.

I prefer D143 as a tire cleaner over D108 almost everytime.

Try going over the tire multiple times until you see white suds with D108. By the way different tire brands react differently.

Is the residue you're seeing look like little pieces of rubber bits crumbling off the tire when you rub it? I recently detailed a brand new truck that was 6 days old and ran into this situation with the tires... I had to scrub and rinse them about 5 times using D108 before I could get mostly all of it off. In my case it just had to do with the tires being new and getting rid of whatever's on them from the factory. It's a PITA.

Also, if you've continuously been treating them with Hyper Dressing you might find that it sort of becomes penetrated into the rubber of the tires after a while. It's hard to completely wash off.

        Btw, Great looking truck.

Thanks, the tires were cleaned after installation till I saw no residue from them. Yes I use hyper dressing after every wash but I also clean the tires every wash with D108. What I see on my microfiber after wiping the tires down is just black residue. Which is probably left over hyper/dirt from the tires. I just want to avoid getting BROWN tires, but trying to find another tire cleaner that is wheel safe and yet removes all the residue is proving challenging.

I give my tires a good scrub with my regular cars wash suds, and then use a foaming tire cleaner (Not Meguiar's) and my tires look great. I like the matte black look, not shiny, so if you buy a foaming tire cleaner and like the matte finish as opposed to glossy, make sure it says Matte Black Finish.

As for browning, tire cleaners do not cause this, (but may enhance it). Tires have chemicals added to combat ozone, and this bleeds out normally. It is called "blooming". Certain brands of tires are worse for this, Michelin comes to mind, and I ride Michelins. I found that some of the Meguiar's stuff seems to bring out the browning, whereas the foam I use does not. There is an old thread on here with me complaining about Meguiar's stuff (Hot Shine I think) and making my tires brown. It was explained to me about the "blooming" and not necessarily caused by the product. Anyway I found this other stuff and and very happy with it.

From what it sounds like your tires have reached the point as mine.. If so they've reached the point where they've become married to Hyper Dressing and no amount of scrubbing with either D108 or D143 will get the conditioning totally off anymore. The good thing is you shouldn't worry about them ever turning brown. At this point, you could probably go without applying anything sometimes and find your tires look way blacker and better than normL peoples tires.

I don't have to think about the reside you find on your towels when drying because I use a Master Blaster Sidekick to blow dry my wheels & tires. You should look into getting 1. They're sweet
