  • Swirl marks

I have some swirl marks that won't come out of a white car. I have tried 2 coats of ColorX 2 coats of cheap Repco scratch & swirl remover with no luck. So I will have to buy a new product. Which one should I buy, Meguiar's swirl 2.0, scratchX or Meguiar's compound.
PS. In Australia UW has gone from $50 to $75 because of the falling dollar.
    Thanks Shane.

Are you working by hand or machine?

By Hand. I tried one of those cheap orbitals but it was useless.

One can only do so much by hand. You may want to consider investing in a dual action polisher.

If anything ultimate compound would be a good investment. It may or may not be enough trying to remove defects by hand.

          Re: Swirl marks

By hand I'd suggest Ultimate Compound followed by Ultimate Polish.

But as said above...you can not accomplish by hand what you can with a DA machine.

Also note...can you feel the scratches?

            Re: Swirl marks

Yeah I can't afford a da, but I am saving for meguiar's power drill da $95 bucks on ebay.
I can't feel the swirls but you can see them in sunlight.
I think I will go with the compound.
            Thanks for your help. Shane.

I would save that $95 and put it towards a DA.

                Hi Guys (and Gals)!!

Been a while since I posted.

To bring the group up to date, I've acquired a real estate license in CA and am working on commercial deals in the Truckee/Tahoe area.

Going well so far. No closings yet but have great training and mentoring from my managing broker.

On the vehicle front, I traded my Accent in on a Hyundai Azera. Deep red color, and a great step up from the hatchback.

Parked in some oblique sunlight today and noticed swirl marks on the trunk lid (must have a different bodyman at the dealership, no swirls on the Accent when I bought it 2 years ago).

Question for the group: What's the best combination to remove the swirl marks? Car has 250 miles on it (had 21 when I got it, but that was 3 whole days ago).

Have a DA orbiter and full complement of wool, foam and terry pads.

Also have most of the chemicals needed, consumer line of Meguiar's products. Also using GC Carnuaba Paste Wax. Should I change waxes since the color is darker?

                Thanks!

                  Re: Swirl marks

^ IMHO Personally, I like using a DBP5 backing plate with a DA along with 5" pads.
My favorite least aggressive method for swirl correction is Megs D300 and DMC5 microfiber discs.
This combo can be followed (if needed) with a soft foam pad and Megs Ultimate polish for clarity.
                  Your wax should be fine.

                    Re: Swirl marks

I would try some M205 with a polishing pad.

                      Hi Bill,
you want to do a test spot with the least aggressive pad/product combo you have and see if that gets the results you're looking for.

So (as suggested above) M205 with a foam finishing pad would be a good start. If that doesn't work, you could try going for a more aggressive pad (foam polishing, and/or MF finishing and/or MF cutting). M205 is surprisingly effective with those pads. If you still have no joy, try the above sequence of pads with something like UC this time.

                      Good luck!

(True to form, M205 is one of the few chemicals I don't have. Will root around for some clean foam finishing pads--in any event, affordable. No work on it just yet--waiting for the weather to clear [still in a stormy cycle {for a change!}])

                          No worries!

Ultimate Polish is similar to M205 (a bit less aggressive) if you have that?

                            Hey, thanks!

I do have that, and looks like the weather will be clear for a bit--will tackle the finish this weekend.

Ultimate Polish may not be aggressive enough to remove swirls but try it first.
A slightly more aggressive choice would be Megs Ultimate Compound.
Both of these products should be available locally. (auto parts store etc.)
