  • Paste wax hard to buff off?

So what am I doing wrong with the paste wax?

I let it dry and buffing it off is really tough and I get this thick layer of wax that a real chore to get all the wax off...

    What's the trick?

Sounds like you are using too much product. You want a thin layer.

      Yes, very very thin.

Thin is in, apply wax, especially paste waxes real thin. Think less is more, thick wax application means more waste and you won't get better results or protection with thick applications.

So that is what I'm doing wrong then. Whenever I use paste wax it takes me forever to get it to buff out, so I always just thought that this is how this product is. Do you just apply it lightly enough so that you can just barely see it?

In a nut shell, yup! To maybe say it better...ridiculously thin.

If you put a heavy coat on, not only is it a bear to remove, but think of all the wax that is wasted.

The best trick I've learned is to use liquid wax with a machine

Sorry guys, couldn't resist. I also used to wax with paste by hand, too, but never again, especially on a non-compounded and non-polished finish. Sometimes, the paste is just too gloopy, then it dries at different rates on different panels, and then actually bonds like glue to the clearcoat - the very surface you don't want to be endlessly wiping because you're wiping off the very wax you just proudly put on. I've seen this no matter how micron-thin I may have applied it, especially on hoods. You're only left with a mere whisper of polishing oil that only washes off in days, with worn out shoulders and elbows for the privilege. Even some liquid waxes by machine can still be very frustrating to remove, and even after a full polish. For example, I've had trouble with Gold Class liquid removal, but D301 in exactly the same conditions is extremely easy to apply and remove, even using it liberally, because you wipe off the excess immediately. Sometimes a product type or category just isn't the right solution for your conditions or application and thus doesn't work as intended - blame the weather or the stars

Re: Paste wax hard to buff off?

If you open a brand spanking new can of paste wax and wax your entire car with it, and you've done it properly thin, the contents of that can should look virtually untouched. If you've ever scooped wax out of a can, odds are with that initial scoop you picked up enough wax to cover the entire vehicle - probably more than once.

Now, this is true whether you apply by hand or with a DA polisher using 4" foam pads. When applying a paste wax by hand, use the tips found in this discussion. When applying a paste wax with a DA, following the tips in this discussion.

In paste form, when properly applied using either of the two above methods, Ultimate, NXT Tech Wax, M26 High Tech Yellow Wax and Gold Class Carnauba Plus are all a breeze to wipe off. Ultimate Wax is probably the easiest of the bunch, honestly, but the others aren't far off. Those of you familiar with M16 Professional Paste Wax know that even a slightly thick application left to dry for too long can be challenging to remove. A really heavy application may require a hammer and chisel to remove! But properly thin, with a short dry time, and even M16 shouldn't be a pain in the backside. It won't actually be a breeze though, either!! But the feeling of accomplishment when you're done with it!!

Or just stick to Ultimate paste.
