  • My Damaged Paint - Your remedy

Just bought this 2003 Protege5 in Midnight Blue Mica .. good overall except for the driverside rear quarter and the rear top spoiler/vailance. How would you attack this? Leaning towards 3000 grit but not committed.

Hard to tell from your pics, but it looks like clear coat failure. If it is, it would require repainting to rectify.

Hard to say without any closer shots of the areas. But based on the photos you posted, it looks like clear coat failure to me as well. If it is, then the only fix is a repaint.

I appreciate the honesty.. but my fix is gonna have to be Budget. This is no show car. I want to be proud of it but the price I'm willing to pay for that is low. Time on the other hand I have..I don't mind labor intensive. I may use the vailance as the guienna pig and if successful try to duplicate on the quarter.

Well just be aware that the 3000 grit will remove the clear in that area. Anything you do after (polishing, waxing) will not take to that area. Sounds like you could be up for a painting project.

I really don't wanna paint... I may try to remove the clear and re clear on the vailance- see how it goes... If it goes well and I opt for trying it on the quarter.. I will spend the time and sand the whole panel- back of drivers door to the hatchback- with the idea of NOT blending it to try and give it better integrity. My only other budget option would be doing the prep work myself and then have a pro shoot it. I have seen some re-clears work.. the car has 127k on it... so 200 ish in 3 years? Something that gives good appearance, is cheap, and last 3 years.
