  • Touch Up Paint Issue

    2015 Toyota 4Runner Super-White

On my rear passenger side door where my son enters and exits with his school backpack he has created two small chips in the paint (both about the size of the head of a finishing nail). The chips are in the jamb area so when the door is closed they can't be seen. They just bother me and I wanted to touch them up. While at the Toyota dealer I bought the proper touch up paint. I picked up a couple of microscopic size brushes from the hobby store since I read the brush in the touch up paint bottles are worthless for precision spots. I cleaned the areas with 50% water and alcohol (70% ISP). I masked the small areas with tape just to keep things neat. I applied the first coat and waited an hour. I applied the second coat and waited a few hours. The paint did not bond. It simply flaked right off the body of the car.

    What did I do wrong?

Hmm... it sounds like you did everything right.

What caused it to flake off? Was it when you removed the masking tape? I can't say I've ever seen the need to mask the area if applying by brush (not spraying).

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

OK so I finally got the touch up paint to bond but it looks like ****. Is there any way to blend it in with the surround area? Sanding? Compounding?

They are very small dots (1/16" diameter give or take) but they don't blend well and stick out like a sore thumb.

Any help would be appreciated. This is really bothering me.

I can't help on the blending issue on this one..but if need arises in the future take a look at Dr Color Chip. Blends much better that the traditional touch up paint methods

I can't help either on the blending, but if the need arise in the future, don't use a brush of any kind for a small chip. Use a tooth pick, a tiny blob of paint, and put into the chip. Wait for it to dry, and then another tiny blob, and keep doing it until the paint fills the chip. In most cases, and if done right, the paint fills the chip pretty much level.

I over fill the the chips with paint allow to dry, then depending on how high I over fill,
Then I use a Meguiars 2000 grit sanding block to level,
            Next step compound/polish.
            Next step protect.
The paint your working on is single stage paint.
            Hope this helps.
