  • Door side mouldings/trim

I just bought an 2003 Infiniti g35 coupe that came with door mouldings and I took them off... rather impatiently. I heated up just the edges enough that I can start to pry the rest off. Well now it looks like I may have stripped clearcoat, or maybe even both the paint and clearcoat.

Is this something I can fix myself if I bought the Meguiar's DA buffer, a polish kit, and maybe even some wetsanding? I really hate the door mouldings. I'd rather just take it to a body shop as my last resort rather than having to 3M the trim back onto the doors for the rest of the car's life. But at the same time I'm not willing to spend more than $500 for an new paint job on my doors.

    Here's a picture:

    Firstly, welcome to MOL!

In the pic it looks like there has been a previous repair/repaint to the door where the repairer hasn't removed the moldings to paint. It looks like when you've pulled the molding off, the paint from the previous repair was stuck to the strip and has been torn off.

Nothing but a re-paint will fix that unfortunately...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Just what I had feared. Now I just have to figure out what my least expensive options are...
Thinking of maybe just buying new outer door panels, and then just getting bodywork done on the quarter panels. Should keep me well below $1k, I hope.
