  • Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

Hi everyone. I cannot find online what sand paper grit the M#1 medium cut cleaner removes.
I know it's rated level 7. But what scratches will it remove with ease with a buffer with what pad?
    thanks in advance.

It all depends on how hard / soft your paint is, the technique, machine, pad etc.

When you say buffer, do you mean rotary or DA?

You should always try to finish out with the highest grit paper available to you regardless of what a product is capable of.

It will make it much easier to buff out and less chances of having sanding scratches left over.

Re: Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

Thanks for the reply Davey, the paint is a few days old. By the time I start buffing it'll be a week old.
I have a plain wool pad and yellow foam pad. My buffer is a random orbital one. I will be getting a variable speed one tomorrow. So they are both rotary right? They're both electric.
My buffing technique is usually side to side, up and down in a small area.

What pad should I be using with either buffer and the M1 compound?

thanks for the reply as well Dasburninator. I am sanding the orange peel with 2k grit only. I don't wanna drop to anything less because it'll be more work to buff out. I figure I'll do more work sanding and less work buffing.

Is the M1 good for getting out 2k scratches?
and should I used M2 after it? Or just m1 and that'll get the job done?

Re: Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

Lets start by talking about your buffer... What model is it? What model is the new one?

A DA and a rotary are two very different machines. A wool pad is only for a rotary machine.
Medium cut cleaner is only for rotary buffers (this isn't to say it won't work with a DA, but you may not get proper performance out of it)

You may want to step up to 3k grit after the 2k. It will make your life much easier.

Personally I would opt for M100 on a rotary with a wool pad and then follow up with M205 on a foam finishing pad on a DA. Then top it with M305.

But it's all speculation at this point. You'll know after doing a test spot. Nobody can tell you to use Product X with Pad Y and guarantee best results. Like I said, there are many variables.

My buffer is a random orbital one. I will be getting a variable speed one tomorrow. So they are both rotary right?
It sounds like you currently have a DA and you will be getting a rotary. Very different animals. The DA is less 'powerful' but safer. The rotary will cut faster but can do damage if used by inexperienced hands.

Have you used a rotary before?

Wow great info both of you and quick replies. Thank you. They are much appreciated!
Dasburninator, Right now I have a RO WEN buffer. On/off only
With some pressure and a lot of time. It gets out scratches with the meguiars UP. But I am into speed/production. So it's not cutting it for me. No pun intended
The new one I am getting is a Chicago electric from HF. Slightly better than their Drill Master one. Variable speed
I have read of the 100s compounds. I was thinking of the m1 wouldn't work. I would have to go with that.
Just that the m1 being 15$ For a smaller bottle and the m105 being $30 for a big bottle+$30 for m205. I thought I'd see if the m1 was good enough for 2k scratches. Wish I found smaller sizes of m100/105/205 available to pick up.

Davey, I have never used a rotary before and have heard they cut faster and better than a DA. I am going to wing it and hope for the best, or try on an old car I'm getting ready to sell.

But for any compound being used. I'll use a wool pad with the compound and foam pad for polishing.
I am trying to achieve the wettest/glossiest look possible.

Edit: trying to get the wettest look possible.
This is just for one car.

All the other cars, I just want a good cut and polish with more gloss, so my questions are mainly aimed at general cut and polish.
bur feel free anyone to add what compound to use for general cut and polish and what compound to use for a wet finish.

Re: Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

Whilst M01, M02, and M04 were good products and can still work well, they are old technology products and need a whole lot more work to achieve what a modern product can do relatively easily.

If the paint is fresh M105 would be my choice. It was designed for working on fresh paint, and will work well on most older paints too. M100 & M101 are also good products that would work. All are MUCH easier to use than the older M01, M02, & M04 line you're looking into. Yes, they may be pricier, but the time and effort you'll save and ease of use will mightily outweigh the cost.

Also, if you're new to a rotary polisher: please, please, please don't just jump into using it on your brand new paint job! The chance of making an error on a 'repaint required' level is just to great. Practice on something you don't mind destroying the paint on first, maybe an old panel from a junkyard.

And remember to ask as many questions here as you need. Plenty of people who've been where you are now that are only to willing to assist you so you get the best result possible first time.

Re: Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

Select choice, thanks for the great reply! Yea I'm barely starting and with more and more cars that come to me, I am trying to figure out what works the best and the fastest.
i am going to have to bite the bullet and spend the $60 on the m105/205. Going to hurt my starters wallet. But as you said and others in the thread had said, it will be easier and faster.

I will ill get some tomorrow and start practicing with a rotary on that old car I'm gonna sell.

as for the pads to use with these. I usually get them from HF, only that place and a paint supply store but the prices are raised up too much from online products
should I be using a tick fluffy wool pad for the 105 or a thinner one?
and for the 205 should I use their blue polish pad or black finishing pad?

now that my thread has started. Rather than start a new one, what do you guys recommend to use on a fresh paint job without sanding? Just polishing to make it feel slick?

Re: Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner #1 highest grit for it?

I would strongly reccommend starting out with foam pads if you're using your rotary.

Wool will either damage the paint or create a mess (holograms etc) if you're not experienced. If the foam isn't "cutting it" then step up to wool.

Davey, I will start with a wool pad then since I am new to rotaries.
What pad do you recommend for the cutting and polishing?
orange cut pad for the compound and blue polish pad for the polish?
thanks for the rely and thanks in advance.

M100 and microfiber cutting pads on a DA can remove 3K sanding marks. Mike Stoops had posted that on here before.

I've removed 2000 grit sanding marks with a DA (8mm throw) and a W-7207 maroon cutting pad with M105 fairly easily in the past. Obviously depends on the particular paint but it can be done.

M105 would remove 2k grit marks on a rotating variable speed buffer right?
i find 2k to be just enough to remove orange peel and leave little scratches that can be buffed out.
The m01 is not able to do that I guess.
Tried Meguiars ultra polish and just takes too long and too much pressure behind the buffer to work.
