Hello - I have a brand new car that has a few fine scratches in the front fender (I believe from washing the car) that can only be seen from a specific angle when light is reflecting off the surface. They are definitely only within the clear coat as you can not feel them when rubbing your finger over. In trying to remove them I used 3 coats of Meguairs Polishing Compound (red bottle) with a foam applicator by hand in a circular pattern and it did not seem to make much difference in the scratches. I am considering using the Meguairs Ultimate Compound by hand but I wanted to get others opinions here as I don't want to make the appearance worse than it already is with it being a new car. I attached a picture for reference below. Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: Fine scratches in new car paint
Would you recommend starting with SwirlX (or another product first)? I was thinking of using the UC as I didn't have a lot of luck with the Polishing Compound, but I don't want to go too far. Either way I'm planning to do it by hand.

Re: Fine scratches in new car paint
It's hard to see the scratch, but let's just say - been there done that. The first time I tried removing a scratch, I used Ultimate Compound and not the right technique, so I messed up. Don't do what I did. You don't want to make it worse.
When using the Ultimate Polish and the foam pad, did you use a lot of pressure (elbow grease)? If you didn't, try it all over but use pressure. As long as your fingers are flat on the pad (don't use your fingertips) you should be fine using more pressure. Do that 2-3 times. If no success, use Scratch X. I find this product to generally be very good for minor scratches.
If, after using Scratch X atleast 3 times with pressure doesn't remove the scratches (don't worry, it really should) then move up to ultimate compound. But remember, proper technique is vital. Not only for ultimate compound, but for Scratch X and polish too. Don't press down with your finger tips! Make sure the area is clean and that the pad is clean. If you drop the pad, wash it before anything. Wipe all the residue off before it dries and do so with a premium microfibre towel. Once it's wiped off, use a clean part of the towel or just another towel to buff the area.
And ofcourse, seal the area after (put wax on). This is very important! I can recommend Ultimate Liquid Wax.
I hope that helps. Post the result!
Edit: also, scratches like that, unless it's a swirl, shouldn't happen from washing. Are you using two buckets, quality mitts, quality towels, making sure everything is clean etc? Just trying to help

Re: Fine scratches in new car paint
^^ Good plan.
Failing that, UC should take care of them.Originally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Re: Fine scratches in new car paint
It appears that it helped for the most part, I can still see a few very faint scratch marks that can only be seen at a specific angle. Not sure if a more finer polish (either SwirlX or Ultimate Polish) or using it with a polisher would help with those since they are very fine... I hate to make it look worse as it looks much better now than previously.
