  • M-101 drying to fast

    Hi guys

So I've been using m101 to polish motorcycle fairings. I've been using a Rupes mini with a lc wool pad. I have been only getting one section pass before it dries up. After that it's like glue!

I usually just spray a mist of water and keep polishing but then again I only get another section pass.

Is is this Normal? Does 101 usually gum up like glue after one section pass? It hasn't just been on the fairings either. I've used it on car paint and it's the same thing for me.

Any secrets that I'm missing or special techniques I need to know?

    Thanks again for the help.

I'm able to get more than one pass with M101. Wool is pretty aggressive. It could be the heat killing the working time. It could also be the outside temperature and humidity affecting the working time.

Have you tried using foam pads?

Well I'm just a couple miles from you so temps were about 90 with low humidity. I was doing it inside the garage so no direct sunlight.

I haven't tried 101 with foam pad. I'll try it tomorrow.

But I did start with Rupes blue pad with blue compound and got the same results with it sticking to paint and having to use water to help remove the compound.

I know now it's user error so I'm just trying to get help to get my technique down.

I've had the same thing happen to me using 101 and B&S foam pads on my DeVille. Could not work it close to long enough to get defects out, and it was a bear to wipe off. I tried both yellow and orange pads, using a DA. All work was done with temps in the low 80's at night(9 or 10 pm) in a garage.

mix in some M205, shake bottle, put a bead down & get back to work. the m205 should extend the work time a bit & decrease dust. also, if your working under a halogen light for corrections, turn it off for a few, turn it back on after a few passes. the heat from the halogen light will heat and dry out the M101 by itself kinda quick. btwy i love M101, i dont care how much of a pita it is to work with sometimes!!

also, i use meg m34 final inspection to clean up the panel, before moving onto the next. it cleans the M101 better than water only bottle. i use M101 OFTEN!!

                    Thanks for the tips guys.

It it might have been the speed and wool generating too much heat and drying it out.

I had had it on speed 5 with the wool and only got 1 pass. I turned it down to speed 4 and got 2 section passes. Still dried like glue but not as bad. I used 101 on a blue Rupes pad and it was a lot better. It left a couple spots that dried like glue but it wasn't as bad.

Thanks for the tip Andrew. I didn't mix 205 with 101 but now I know. If I really need to do that later on at least I'll know it can be done
