  • Daily drivers in new development

Good day everyone. I am busily reading the threads on here but with thousands to go through, I am hoping for a bit of direct advice. I have read the Daily Driver wash thread but mine is a bit different.

I live in a new housing development with a number of new constructions down wind of us. The wind blows strongly and dust, dirt, and debris is common. I wash on the driveway and if I do it later in the day, it is common to have a dusting of dust on the car before it dries. I park both cars outside, one on a gravel driveway, the other on the street. Both are daily driven on major highways. I log about 100 kms a day as does my wife. A garage is not in the picture.

Both cars are 2011s, one being a black Ford Fiesta the other a blue Hyundai Elantra Touring. They have some swirls, chips, and dings as you would expect from daily drivers but those are questions for another thread.

I currently have Meguiar's Deep Crystal Car Wash and just picked up the Meguiar's clay bar kit. I have a micro fiber wash mitt and a pressure washer.

What can I do to minimize the damage done to my paint and ease my washing while construction continues up from me. I anticipate building for at least the next five years upwind of us. I am not looking for show car finish but rather a protective layer that may help out.

I am located in Canada with the easiest place to purchase being Canadian Tire. I would seriously consider ordering online if a product recommended is not available via CT.

    Thank you for any suggestions.

As always some sort of protection will help as it will make future cleanings easier. I would go with a sealant like NXT, M21, Ultimate Wax or Paint Protect 365.

Also you may want to consider a rinseless or waterless wash. Fighting dust is a losing battle. But with these you can wipe down daily. If you do it properly you can avoid instilling severe swirls. Just be aware that touching the paint creates static electricity this attracting dust. You will notice this more on darker colored vehicles.

Re: Daily drivers in new development

I don't have a garage and here in the northeast residential roads are treated with sand and salt in the winter. This sand/salt mix stays on the roadways until about April or May every year until the town sends out the street sweepers to clean it all up. This stuff is REALLY dusty when dry and every car that drives down my street raises some of this dust into the air creating dust fallout on vehicles parked in the driveway. Why am I making a short story long???

The best solution for me and maybe for you is to use a California Duster! I know some folks reading this will argue against the evil California Duster because if not used correctly will instill swirls into the paint. However, when it is used correctly efficiently (as in less than 5 minutes) will safely remove the dust that settles on the car's finish. I use my CA Duster every day at least once.

To use it correctly, DON'T put any weight onto the duster when dusting your car. In fact, don't even allow the very light weight of the duster onto the car. When passing the California Duster over your paint just let the fibers of the mop drape lightly on the paint. Go panel by panel like any other detailing task. Shake the duster frequently. Follow these recommendations and you can safely clean off dust with no harm to a nicely detailed finish.

Try it. You can find authentic California Dusters at big box stores like Walmart for about $12. Mine is 3-4 years old, never been washed and still works great. $12 isn't much to lose when your searching for a solution for an issue like yours.

(No, I'm not on the payroll for the CA Duster company!)
      Hope this helps.

Yes, the "California" Duster (there are many similar variations) is my first go-to. Alberta should also be dry/arid enough most days that most of this dust will be easy to lightly brush off, rather than being a sticky residue. After a minute or two of dusting, you can touch up the edges and any soiled areas with UWWA or QD or QW. Upwind farm dust and pollens can be thick where I am, too, but not quite as strong as what you're describing. Once the construction phases are over, should be much less dusty, too.

Is it just fine dust, or are there gritty particles in it too?

I love my Ca Duster, but there are limits to what it can do (safely)...

Thank you for the replies so far.

I have seen those dusters and was curious whether they were just novelty items. I will be checking it out.

The dust is usually pretty fine. I am unsure what would constitute gritty though. I am guessing that it might be gritty. I know it is dry clay for the most as that is what the development is constructed on. The rest would be blown gravel and dust from a haul road a ways away from here.

Just be aware of when you use a duster (if you end up getting one).

Like I said, they have their limitations and are only made for very light dust.

My rule of thumb is: if you're unsure whether you should be using it (due to how dirty the car is), then you probably shouldn't.

Another "thumbs up" for the California duster. Having now two black cars, and not a fan of rinseless washes, it is my go to tool. it is a Unless there is some additive in the gravel, the gravel dust will be just that...dust. Grit doesn't travel far because it is heavy, whereas gravel dust will float on the wind and accumulate on your car. Definitely worth a try and Canadian Tire does carry them. Just remember to LIGHTLY dust using the ends of the threads. It is kind of like a flicking motion...not a rubbing motion.

I will keep an eye out for a Duster then when they go on sale.

Having just washed my car, I now find the following:

                  Lovely, eh?

I got some Ultimate Compound to lightly hand rub it off. It is some sort of rubbed on rubber from a bumper I suspect. Based on what I have read, it seems the best choice.

                  Thoughts?

Re: Daily drivers in new development

Apologies to the mod that looks after this forum. Please delete either of the two tries at posting the photos of the scrape on my car.

I thought I had misposted with the HTML so tried with the direct link.

                    No spamage was intended.

For anyone interested, I am trying to figure out if Ultimate Compound is the right choice to remove the bumper scraping on my fender well. If you search for wesm in the gallery on here, you will find the photos. It is a grey, rubbery / stuck on substance on my paint. I am hesitant to scrap it off though it looks scrapeable as well. I figure that UC will let me rub it off gently (hand powered) and do no damage.

It's hard to tell how deep the scratch is. It looks like paint transfer.

                      Give UC a shot.

                      This should help

Thanks for posting those up for me. I believe I have a certain number of posts before I can post pictures.

I will try the UC today and post the results.

                          Well, success achieved with UC.

Still can't post but there is an after image in the gallery showing after.

After that small amount of rubbing, I have much more respect for those that correct whole cars by hand.

I think it is more a new member's restrictions as I am following the instructions. It has gone to moderation twice now. I read somewhere that it was 30 posts before you can post pictures without restriction so I will do what I can to get to that number without being spammy.

It did turn out nice. Now I want a powered polisher so I can do more, more, more ...
