Last weekend I did my Sentra. Clay, MPPC, #81 Hand Polish and #26 Paste Wax. I appied the wax in what I thought was a thin coat and removed after about 10 minutes. It was really tough to remove and it left some residue. I used Final Inspection to finish it up and it looked nice. Today I put another coat of #26 on and I figured it would remove easier since it was a second coat. I had the same problem as last week. I even did the whole car this time before I started to remove it. I still thought it was hard to remove and it left residue. How thin is thin? I use the megs yellow foam applicator and just twirl the can once or twice to get some on the pad and then apply what I have on the pad to about a 2x2 section and use a MF towel for removal.

Sounds like you may want to let it sit for a few more minutes before you remove. Also if you are having problems with streaking or excess residue, simply apply some more wax to those areas and remove before allowing it to haze. I had always battled with that on my truck, but this trick really helps.

#26 needs to haze but can't be left too long. You also need to apply so thin that you can barely tell it's there.
If you have a PC, it'll make it a bit easier.
A quick swipe with the foam pad should be enough for a 2x2 area. Your method of twirling sounds like it should be enough for half a hood or more.
Something you can try is to smear a line of wax along half the hood and then spread it out as thinly as possible.
