I have Meguiar's clay kit. It came with 2 clay bars, and I used only one bar to clay the entire exterior of my car. The new clay appears white, and the used clay bar looks like faded white. The clay bar has a lot of contaminants in it (I NEVER dropped it so far), and I'm wondering is it safe to use a "used" clay bar? When is it time to throw away a clay bar?

Re: When is it time to throw away a clay bar?
When I was using clay, I cut the clay bar in half and half again to expose a fresh surface from the centre of the bar which is not used if just kneading it
Once I've used every single millimetre of surface area and it's looking dirty, I throw it away
Once it's totally used up, move on to another clay bar or buy the new prep towel technology

When it looks almost a greyish color or there are no more clean surfaces when you knead it, then it's time to toss it out for a new one.

Re: When is it time to throw away a clay bar?
It really is a judgement call as there is no clear cut way to describe when a clay bar is "done". How badly contaminated a vehicle or vehicles is/are makes a lot of difference in the lifespan of a clay bar. We've seen clay bars survive through the cleaning of half a dozen cars or more, but we've also seen cars so heavily contaminated that a single clay bar couldn't handle it on its own.
You might consider doing something like this: if you're uncomfortable using a given clay bar on a car with relatively unmarred paint, then save that clay bar for a car that you fully intend to machine compound after claying and use a new one on this particular car. Basically, if you're not comfortable using a piece of clay again - judgement call - then toss it.Michael Stoops
