  • Using #81

I have been reading about people applying pure polishes such as #81 over previous coats of wax for car show and cruise weekends. I was thinking of the next time I wax one of our cars, instead of just putting another coat of wax on, putting #81 on first and then wax ( car was polished with #80 last time I waxed and dosn't need any major paint correction yet). But I was wondering if it might be a waste of time. Will #81 stay on the surface of any remaining wax and be wiped away when wiping off the excess? Or does #81 have enuff cleaning action to clean off the old wax and work its way into the paint?
    Any answers would be appreciated.

    Hi bluemoon,

A couple of things, M81 Hand Polish is completely non-abrasive, if you create any cleaning action, it will more be a matter of your applicator material and the action of your hand or your choice of machine.

    That said,

It's impossible to completely seal a surface with something you pour out of a bottle, or scoop out of a can. There will always be porosity to some degree. This then being true, an application of a pure polish over a coating of wax will to some degree penetrate past the wax and reach the paint. This is actually pretty easy to see in person on black paint after waxing.

The best thing to do is to try it, using a thin coating of polish and using either a clean soft foam applicator pad by hand, or Meguiar's W-9006 foam finishing pad with a dual action polisher on the 3.0 setting

Wipe off and inspect. Remember to lock into your brain how the finish looked before, or do a side-by-side test section.

Thanks for the information Mike, it is greatly appreciated I will give it a try on paint I think you are familiar with, Honda's black with blue pearl.
I was searching for answer for a couple of nights before posting this question, and now that I did, I finally found another similar thread that has alot of excellent information that you provided.
I was just curious, if i wax my car, then after a few weeks i polish it with Show car glaze does it make my wax less effective? Does it take wax off?

Thanks again, at least I know now that adding #81 should be time well spent.
