  • Sealant and Polish Questions

So in trying to nail down a solid detailing program, I am getting confused and want to make sure I am on the right track. From what I have gathered, the sealant that I have (M20) is also a polish. For that reason, I figured out that I could only use it before my high-tech yellow wax and those two would be the only two coats. I have also gathered that I do not have to polish every time I wax, but only a couple of times a year. The other times, I would only apply the carnuba. So here are my questions:

Is there a sealant that has no polish characteristics that I can apply after I apply the polish (I use UP) and before the carnuba? I am looking strictly for long-term protection with the sealant, since I have the polish and wax covered.

What is the downside to applying a light polish (UP) every time I wax?

Am I looking for a "sealant glaze"?

Is the M20 as good a polish as the UP?

    Re: Sealant and Polish Questions

1st, in meguiar’s talk, polish isn’t an abrasive or cleaner type product, polish refers to the oils used to enhance the depth, shine and overall “wet-look”.. M20 is a cleaner sealant (I may be wrong, but it may also contain polishing oils). If you want a sealant with no or very negligible cleaning properties (but do contain polishing oils), you can use Ultimate Wax (liquid or paste), M21 synthetic sealant, NXT 2.0, another wax with polishing oils in it is Gold Class Carnauba Plus.

Ultimate Polish being a very, very mild cleaner polish, the downside is that it may not be necessary to use it every single time and may prove costly in the long run. Since you have both M20 and High tech yellow wax, M20 may remove the Ultimate Polish due to the cleaners present in M20. For quick details, I would apply M20 first, wait 8-12 hours for it to cure, then apply M26 Hi-tech yellow wax.

I am doing my sister's car this weekend and her paint is pretty oxidized. I am going to start with the UC to get the oxidation off and I was wondering if I could use the M20 after that and before the high-tech yellow. Would I be fine, since the UC removed most of the oxidation? If I didn't do the M20, would I have to do the UP after I did the UC?

Sounds like you have all of the products in you arsenal (UC, UP, M20 and M26). You can do a few test spots first. It will depend, in some cases, UC itself works fine itself and immediately jump to the finishing wax. I would do a comparison between UC then M20 then Hi-Tech, if you're happy with the results with them, then maybe you can skip the UP. However, since it's oxidized, Ultimate Polish may be needed. After the full detail, the next quick detailing jobs may only require M20 followed by M26. Of course, it will really help if you have good spray wax for in between waxing jobs (UQW comes to mind).

          Re: Sealant and Polish Questions

M20 is a sealant with polishing oils in it. Polish does not mean abrasive in Meguiar's talk. It's just oils etc which bring out gloss & shine.

I think you're thinking of a cleaner wax, which M20 isn't. Cleaner waxes contain a small amount of abrasives which remove oxidation, light swirls and other defects, while adding a layer of protection at the same time.

So in your case, I would go with the UC and inspect the paint in direct sunlight afterwards. If there is any marring left behind from the UC, you would clean it up with UP. Then apply your wax of choice (M20 and/or M26).

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

            Re: Sealant and Polish Questions

I would like to correct myself. I just found out / remembered that M20 is indeed a very mild cleaner wax.

So to answer your question above, you could go:

            UC
            M20 (if pressed for time)

            OR

            UC
            M20
            M26

            OR

            UC
            UP
            M26

Again, a test spot would tell you what looks best.
