  • What else can I do?

Hello again from a long adsence.....

A short background on the car in question - The car was hit a couple of years ago and half repainted about a year later, about 2 years ago that I'm guessing. Since then it has always been garaged and only really taken out on odd weekends etc. It was also covered with a soft car cover when "stored".

Recently I have been driving it daily (due to my daily driver Fairlane dying) When I get my daily driver back on the road the Fairlane will go back to weekend duty. What else can I do to protect the paint and/or improve on what I'm already currently doing? Not much was required as it was rarely taken out, only water/bucket washed 4 times since being repainted, just Quick Detailed and covered up.

I'm worried that I'm not doing enough now that it's getting driven daily.

At present it gets waxed once a year, clay bar first only if needed, and Quick Detailed every 1 - 3 days depending on dust. Car is garaged overnight but undercover outside during the day.

Since it's winter I wont touch it if it has rained and going to rain 3 days later. I'll wait for a week clearing and wash it then even though I don't like water washing it.

I use Gold Class car wash
    NXT Gen Tech 2.0 Wax
Quick Detailer (I just picked up a bottle of UQD to try)

Are there other products that would be better suited? I should mention the car is a greenish/grey blue and really seems to pop with the NXT gen wax, quite deep rich and wet appearing. I've never been a fan of constantly building up wax layers. It isn't a show car but I do get stopped quite a bit to talk about it.

I will say the NXT Gen wax is amazing as the paint has an extremely slick feel and dust just glides off. Is the UQD sufficient or is something like UQW better once a week as a booster sort of thing. I read somewhere about dust getting trapped in the UQD polymers but wouldn't wax be the same?

Re: What else can I do?

I can understand waxing only once a year since it's garage kept and driven very little.
My suggestion would be to follow up UQD with UQW when you are wiping off dust.

Also, not sure when you will be get your DD back but if it's going to take a while, I would NXT the car every 3-4 months and UQW during or after drying the car after washing.

Yeah, UQW after a wash is great.

Can UQW be applied straight after UQD? As much as I like Meguiars and have been using it as long as I can remember there are too many products that overlap eachother. Can you over-do UQW or is once a week plenty?

Re: What else can I do?

^ Should not be a problem to use UQW after UQD.
They are two different products with 2 different purposes so they do not overlap each other.
UQW is a great product but it is no replacement for regular wax but I believe it should be good for 2-4 weeks? depending on conditions so once a week is plenty.

Re: What else can I do?

Although not bad the car could use a quick clay and wax. I guess it has been about 4 months since I've started driving it daily, and probably about a year now since I last waxed it. Wow, time sure sneaks up. I wasn't specifically referring to the UQD and UQW, but different products in the different lines like Gold Glass and NXT etc..

Maybe I'll clay, wax and UQW on my next day off.

Re: What else can I do?

Well... the Ultimate line is the newest so may be you want to stick with that but it all boils down to what your preference is and what works for you.
However, you sound like someone who can't keep your hands off your car. If that's the case, perhaps you want to try Meg's Detailer's line and buy in bulk.

Re: What else can I do?

Hopefully this works, I thought I'd attach an image. I'm just an average Joe so the consumer line suits me fine.

I will wax the car more often and top it up with UQW as a booster since I don't feel the paint is properly protected at the moment. I can feel the surface needs to be clayed but it's still not bad considering it hasn't been waxed in a year, but anything to help is welcomed. I bucket washed it a week ago and UQD'd it the other day.

Will Ultimate wash and wax be a better choice as opposed to the Gold Class wash?

I'm not sure at which point it is recommended for older cars (classics) not to be washed with the traditional style 2 bucket method due to rust.

Seems from your pictures your car is fully pampered. (Looks beautiful )

I really like Ultimate Past Wax.

You can look into Meguiars Rinsefree Express Wash.

                      Thanks,

That is exactly why I don't like bucket washing. I'm a bit old fashioned so I'm extremely nervous about waterless spray on wipe off car washes. I'm sure it's fine but I have yet to make the jump.

What kind of material is on the top?

Re: What else can I do?

It's just a typical vinyl roof. I normally try and treat it with a vinyl product/wax to repel water although it hasn't been done for some time. When the vinyl cracks water gets under and bad things happen, mine isn't perfect but all I can do is try to prolong its life.

I have to keep telling myself what car 30+ years old is perfect unless completely restored, this one is unrestored and pretty original aside from be repainted at some stage. It still looks tidy and while it still has its issues is quite clean. Maybe I'm just fussy, although probably not as fussy as many here.

It's a solid looking car. I like it.
Here's my 2 cents on what you could do to make it look even better.

                            1. That top has the potential to really stand out and pop. Have you thought about trying Megs Ultimate Protectant on it? If you havn't tried that product yet, you might be pleasantly surprised at the level of quality it provides compared to the typical 'protectants' that have been around forever.
Ultimate Black, along with the Ultimate Black Sponges are ideally packaged/dispensed for exterior surfaces while Ulltimate Protectant/sold in a spray bottles is how most people are used to using interior protectant.. But if I recall those 3 products are basicly the same thing in different bottles. [the Guz would know for sure]
So long story short, try some Ultimate Black on that top

I've got plans to detail a 72' all original white Ford Mustang very soon. And it has a black or dark green vinyl roof thats been collecting dust in it's garage for a while now.. Making it pop with Ultimate Black is what I'm looking forward to as part of the finishing touches to make the owner see a big difference once I'm done with it.

                            2. That's a mighty big chrome bumper on your ride.. They sure don't make em anything like that anymore.. You should be taking full advantage of having all that real chrome and hit it with some Meguiars Chrome Polish and serve it some Justice.

                            3. Your car has some beefy tires as well. Whether you're a 'matte' finish kind of guy, or a super gloss tire low rider;p Take full advantage of having that much tire and keep em super clean [to your prefference] at all times. 95% of todays cars wish they had real tires like that to display

                            4. You're paint seems fine.

                            5. Welcome to MOL!
