  • Scratch in Windshield Trying to Remove Debris

I had a glob of debris stuck on one of my car's windshields today. Therefore, I did about 10 applications of Glass Cleanser (Meguiar's concentrated mixed down) and my glass towels, to slowly weaken the blob, whatever it was. However, after I finally got it all, I noticed a 1 inch scratch next to where the blob had been. It put a little over 1 inch scratch in the windshield right in front of the passenger.

I had never scratched (by cleaning) any of my windows before on any car (hope it doesn't happen again).

However, even though I can not "feel" the scratch, is it pretty much hopeless to remove it? It's very annoying for the passenger to look through the scratch even though it's just over an inch it's really at the eye level.

    Thanks.

If your fingernail doesn't get trapped in the scratch then you could remove it. Rotary buffer, glass cutting disc and glass cutting liquid (containing cerium oxide) are needed. The hardest thing will be to find the last item as the worldwide prices on cerium oxide went extremely high lately (China is its biggest producer). The whole glass cutting process is very messy. Cover the surrounding area to avoid extra cleaning work after and clean the affected glass very well. Expect a lot of heat build-up so touch the area frequently and if it gets super hot then let it cool down before continuing (otherwise you may permanently melt/reshape the glass).

Thank you for the advice. I don't think I will rush to work on this, fearing I could make it worse, but I may have to eventually. I sure wish I hadn't went out that day, had this debris fall on it, and then caused this scratch cleaning it. It sure wasn't my day. Oh well.

Thanks again for explaining what I would need to do to work on it. I will save this information for when I want to move forward. I suppose I might could practice first too.
