  • Pure White VW swirls

    Hi everyone,

new the to the forums but have been using Meguiars for years. I have a new 2014 VW sportwagen that I'm trying to remove some light swirls but have not been able to, the paint is like glass but still has minor swirls. I have been using a DA with UC/UP but still no luck, have been using generic pads just seeing if I got Meguairs pads if I would have better luck at removing the swirls?

What do you mean by 'generic' pads? If they are from a reputable company like Lake Country etc, then that won't be the issue (unless you're using the wrong type of pad e.g. a finishing pad).

What is your technique like with the DA? Have you been doing this a while or watched some how-to vids? Things like arm speed, downward pressure, pad rotation, cleaning your pads on the fly etc etc can all affect your results.

German cars can have hard paint. It could well be that UC on a foam pad just isn't strong enough to remove the swirls you're chasing. In that case, you may need to step up to MF pads.

    *EDIT* Welcome to MOL btw!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

The pads are from HF just wanted to see how they were good some good stuff about them so for the price I figured I would give them a go. I'm using the polishing pad and the finishing it off with there finishing pad, I'm applying pretty good downward pressure. My technique for using the DA is small sections at a time with overlapping patterns, just started using a DA but have watched lots of videos. Was thinking about going to one of Meguiars Saturday classes to get more hands on help.

Ok, I've heard a many bad things about the HF pads and backing plates.

The HF DA is fine by all accounts, but most people have been buying a set of decent pads and backing plate with it.

Yeah that's what I have been reading too, just wanted to see if that would actually help before going out and buying all new BP and pads, nice thing is my local detailing store carries them in stock. Will give that a try and see if that helps.

The HF pads are not the greatest along with the backing plate. That is why it is recommended to get a 5" backing plate and 5.5" pads. I agree with Davey. It can be many factors as he stated. If it is indeed hard paint you are dealing with then the next step would be to move up to M105, M101 or even the microfiber cutting pads with D300. I find D300+MF cutting pads to work very well on hard clear. You should sign up for this Thursday's class to learn more and get your technique down.

Thanks for the info everyone, I would love to come this Thursday but it will have to wait a few weeks as my daughter has dance class for another month on Thursdays but after those are done I'm definitely signing up for one. As it would be nice to see which way I should go ie foam pad or MF before spending the money on it and realizing I really needed the other one.

                Welcome to MOL!!

By all means, please sign up for TNOG this week and we'll help you get your VW looking the way you want it to. It is pretty common for VWs to have relatively hard paint, so the DAMF System may be the way to go. But before doing so, let's just see what happens with UC on a different pad as well as take a look at your technique. Technique is critical with any tool, and poor technique on a DA will have you chasing defects all day long with very little result. There are several very common mistakes we see new users make so it could be that a bit of hands on help will resolve that. If it turns out your technique is spot on then we'll look at alternative products to get the job done.
