  • 1970's Cadillac Floor Mats

    Good Morning,

I am lucky enough to have the original carpeted floor mats for my 1976 Cadillac. However, I am looking to protect and re-condition the edge of the mats (which is rubber) and give it a good cleaning. The car is only used during the warmer months and never in bad weather...so this is for simple protection and reconditioning.

Someone suggested the #40. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!
    Jeff

I think M40 would be a good thing for sure! You could also try cleaning the edge with some APC diluted 10:1 then apply #40. You could also try using Ultimate Protectant as well. If the rubber is really dirty or grimy, it sounds like it isn't, but if it is then you could try M39 Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner. But I think APC will do just fine!

Great. Thanks! The mats are near perfect except that after nearly 40 years, the rubber along the edge could use some TLC and protection. Small hairline cracks and some hazy rubber. That's it as I believe no one ever treated them.

        Hey jmoffo

I know it's been a long while but did you finally get the moth ball smell out of your caddy and what or how did you do it.

Funny you ask that! Unfortunately, I sold that '76 a while ago. One of the reasons was the smell. No matter what I did and no matter who I took it to, the smell would NOT disappear. I would be out with my kids and wife on a nice warm afternoon cruise...and the smell would get worse! Headaches would ensue. It also needed a lot of carb work, AC work and due to the smell, I would rarely drive it. 6 months later, I regretted it and purchased a 73 Fleetwood. I sold it in the spring and was EXTREMELY fortunate in finding my true love: another 1976 Coupe with 34,000 original miles. (Well-documented by the original owner!) Car smells almost new! And a pleasure to be out driving. Sorry I could not suggest any remedies...the only I CAN suggest is to NEVER EVER use moth balls in a car...NOWHERE!
I am treating the floor mats now with some #40 along the edges to recondition them. I love the #40

I'm old enough to remember when rubber mats were all we had. At the dealership detail shop, we'd scrub them with whatever APC we had, then give them a heavy spray of the same aerosol silicone spray we used for weatherstrips and lay them out in the trunk. When the car got sold, we'd put them back in place and the color would be nice and uniform without a greasy-looking shine. Wipe off the excess and they were ready for delivery.

Mine are carpeted however they are rubber backed and have rubber along the edges and within the Cadillac logo.
They are in such great condition except the edging has some small hairline cracks that the #40 did a great job with.
NOS Cadilla mats are a fortune (if you can find them) and new repros look NOTHING...and I mean NOTHING like the originals.
