  • This might be a little "tacky" (pun intended)

    Greetings All,

I'd like to talk about tape... and all it's tackyness.

I seem to be having a hard time finding a good & tacky tape that I can use to tape off trim and other miscellaneous things around that car. I'd be very grateful for any & all suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Frank

Have you tried Meguiars tape or 3M Auto tape?

      Evan,
I wasn't aware that Meguiar's even offered a tape. As for "auto tape", my local PepBoys only had a 5 pack, so I went with another brand. I've ony tried Frog Tape and 3M Painter's Tape as I had both readily available.

Be careful with the frog tape as I have heard that it will leave behind residue on trim. I have used the 3M blue Painters tape and havent had any issues. You will find if its cold or the trim is wet at all the the tape will have a hard time sticking so just keep that in mind.

Read the label on painter's tape, look for delicate surface tape.

            David & Evan,
Thank you for the advice. I'll certainly keep my eye out for those.

3M blue painters tape is pretty much the defacto detailing tape used by most detailers primarily due to it's ease of release and lack of residue. It's a bit pricier than other masking tape, but the ease of use is what sets it apart.

Our masking tape was great, but due to lack of sales it has been discontinued.

I don't like the 3m at all. I just got some hyStik Production Grade Auto Masking Tape-3/4 #815 and it's working great. Straight tares, no residue, holds up against water and oil, sticks real well and comes off easy.
