  • Pad questions regarding m105 and m205

    Hello everyone.

I've got a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X thats got just regular swirls from improper washing that I plan on detailing very soon but I'm new to all of this and just learning everything. I think I've got most things down but I cant find an answer to this last question I've got before I can start my project...

I've heard that Mitsubishi paint is soft. Can anyone confirm this? I can't figure out what polish and pad combo to use. I plan on using the hex-logic pads from chemical guys with m105 and m205. I was considering using m105 and the orange pad with the Porter Cabler 7424XP then moving on to the white pad and using m205 with the same DA. But now I've started thinking that maybe m105 and the orange pad is a bit too aggressive if it is indeed soft paint. So now I'm thinking maybe I should use the green pad with m105? Or maybe orange and m205? How are we allowed to mix and match pads with polishes? What kind of combos are available? Can I use m205 on an orange cutting pad? What about m105 and white pad? I just dont really understand the concept of pad to polish combos and how they work together or dont work together.

I'm just stuck in this dilemma and I just need to figure this out before I go ahead and pull the trigger.

Right now this is my plan:

DP Xtreme foam formula foam lance
    2 bucket wash
    Meguiars Clay
m105 on green hex-logic from Chemical Guys
m205 on white hex-logic from Chemical Guys
Sealant on ??? Red hex-logic or black hex-logic?

Re: Pad questions regarding m105 and m205

I don't know the pads specifically, but the idea is basically that the products are mild and strong. And then the pads are mild, medium, strong, etc.

So a mild pad and product stays mild. A mild product with a strong pad will end up somewhere in the middle, but the pad may leave marring. I think it is usually better to use the strong product and mild pad to be somewhere in the middle. And then a strong pad and strong product can end up stronger, and risk marring, etc as well.

It sounds like you will want to be sure to do a test spot, and inspect, before doing the whole car.

Hm...so probably would be best to start out with something lighter and go up in strength from there then? Something like green light cutting pad with 205 first then maybe orange medium cutting pad with 205 then 105 on the green pad and finally 105 on the orange?

What would end up more aggressive; m105 on a light cutting pad or m205 and a medium-heavy cutting pad?

I don't know how soft the paint is but you could try m205 on a polishing pad (white) and if its causing marring you go could go to a finishing pad.

Well, if you want to try that many combinations, or are able to, that would be the idea.

I think 105 would be more aggressive, but more the way to go. Like I said, mild products on strong pads isn't usually done.
