  • New car paint perfection. Help!

Any suggestions? 2013 Porsche 911, Black exterior (630 miles). The car looks wonderful when it is clean and parked outside. Under the fluorescent lights in the garage... there are a number of small areas of swirl / light scratches, especially on the hood. I'm not sure if they came about in transport, or by the "detailing" department at the dealership, but I need some assistance in taking the proper steps to remove them without causing other problems or making them worse. I have a Porter Cable 5" random orbital buffer in my tool chest, but I am apprehensive about using it on black paint. I just want them too look at smooth and defect-less as the rest of the car.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your help.

Don't be apprehensive about using your DA - they're almost foolproof.... ALMOST...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Please Wash Me.... Thanks. That car is identical to mine... and those scratches look just like what I am dealing with. Can you give me any pointers before I break out the DA? What is that wax you are using? Davey- that quote is perfect.. and true.

I used Black Wax but it didn't have enough cut.
White Wax might be a better choice due to it's cutting abilities
M205 is my polish so that another option.

Re: New car paint perfection. Help!

Newer Porsches tend to have fairly soft paint, which can be a problem if you go at them really aggressively, but it can also be a blessing in disguise if the paint is in fairly decent shape and you just need to clean it up a bit. That sounds like your situation, so here's what we would suggest:

Start with M205 on a light polishing pad with your DA buffer set to speed 4. Buff a 2' x 2' area in overlapping strokes, going up and down and then side to side, and then repeat both directions. Now wipe off the residue with a clean microfiber towel and inspect the results. Right next to that spot, do the exact same thing but swap the light polishing pad for a finishing pad, otherwise do everything exactly the same. If one of the two processes looks better than the other, then go with that one. If both look equally acceptable to you then stick with the finishing pad. We would expect that the polishing pad is going to be the better option here, but without working on this specific car it's almost impossible to say.

Of course you'll have to wax after buffing out the whole car, so make sure you've got a clean finishing pad available for that step.

Don't tempt me. Nobody around here seems to understand what "detailing" really means. I would be terrified to have them touch any of my cars... it would probably be worth it for you to come here and spend a day.

Reporting back. Finally had some time to give this a go. I used Zaino Swirl and Scratch Remover on a Meguiars microfiber finishing pad with my Porter Cable 7424. It took a few passes (started at speed "4" and worked it up to "6") I then finished up with Meguiars Microfiber correction system wax.... and happy to report that the swirls and scratches are gone.. even under the fluorescent light. It actually was pretty amazing that they came out to my satisfaction.... Thanks...

                        Excellent!

You might just wanna check your work in direct sunlight too, just to be sure.
