  • Polish Question

I have used Meguiar's Mirroer Glaze Machine Glaze #3 and Yellow Wax #26 on my red 1990 Miata since new. I use a Griot da polisher. The car does not have clearcoat. I now have a few surface scratches on my hood from being a little careless while claying. I have heard about your #205 polish and am wondering if that would be appropriate or overkill. I have used #9 swirl remover in the past, but am out of that product. Which product would you recommend?

Through the years, I always received complements on the shine and have had many say they cannot believe it is original paint. I learned early on about your products when one of your representatives gave a presentation at the Miata Club meeting in Minnesota. I have used these products on all my cars, trucks, and motorcycles and have no plans to change. I have made a few converts along the way.

    Thanks,
    Bob/Virginia

    Re: Polish Question

I'd use the 205 first, see how it works for you, using 205 isn't overkill, it's a great polish with just enough cut to remove minor imperfections.

Yeah, 205 would be a good starting point.

        Re: Polish Question

M205 is a finishing polish, so it wouldn't be overkill at all. If anything, it may be too mild but as stated, it would be a good starting point.

Do a test spot with 205 and see if that gives the correction you're after.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

          Another vote for '205'.

If you don't want to go with the 205, take a close look at Ultimate Polish. Smaller container and lower price.

One of the benefits of going with a 'newer' product is the SMAT technology. Using the older Meguiar's products (like #9), one needs to work the 'compound' down. With the SMAT, you can stop when you want, not when the product wants you to stop.

          Make sense?

            Re: Polish Question

Thanks for all your input. I am now wondering whether I should also get the #105 polish. It's too bad I can't get smaller bottles of each, but I realize these products generally cater to professionals. I thought the #105 might be too coarse. I sometimes wonder how much paint layer I have left after 23 years. The car has always been garaged and never felt snow under its tires and seldom rain. The top is usually only up for washing. As such, the wax stays good for a long time, and I usually only polish every other waxing.

              Re: Polish Question

As others have pointed out, M205 is a mild finishing polish so it's far from overkill. As with any product, you can to some extent alter the cutting ability of M205 by using different pads, different tool speeds, pressure, etc. If the scratches you're talking about are from claying they shouldn't be bad at all, and with your Miata having single stage paint it should be very easy to polish. All of that points toward M205 being an excellent choice for this car.

With regard to how much paint you have left after 23 years of what sounds like very careful and routine maintenance, we're willing to bet you've actually got quite a bit. You've been using an extremely mild product in M03 Machine Glaze, and M26 has no cleaning ability. With both of these products you're getting more cleaning from the pads you use than you are from both products combined. And the frequency with which you say you've done these processes and the general care of the vehicle leads us to believe the paint is very "healthy" on this car. Good for you...... but we'd love to see some pictures!!

Now, M105 is a completely different story here. It's one of our most aggressive compounds and can be a bit tricky to use on a DA. We're assuming you're thinking about using it on something other than the Miata, and while that's all fine and well, you may be better off with Ultimate Compound from our Consumer Line. UC is derived from M105, uses essentially the same abrasive set but is altered a bit to make it more user friendly on a DA while still offering plenty of cut.

                Re: Polish Question

I finally detailed my Miata. The M205 worked very nicely to remove mild scratches. I followed using the Mirror Glaze #3 Polish, and was surprised when it actually looked worse. It looked somehow duller and streaky. So I repolished using the M205 and followed with #26 wax. It looks good. I am reluctant to use the #3 polish again, and need to order more M205 for my other two vehicles. If I can figure out how to some pictures on here, I will.

Look into #7 Pure Polish, it has no abrasives.
