  • Scratch x 2.0 left noticeable hazing and swirls...

    Hi there,

So I purchased scratch x 2.0 to remove some light scratches on my hood from my nephew... I applied it with a soft microfiber cloth and buffed lightly, and wiped off with another clean microfiber cloth. after I was finished, i noticed considerable micro scratches in the sunlight..

I purchsed some Scratch doctor by Nu Finish to try and correct it, however it did nothing. I am quite displeased with the scratch x, and now i have to pay someone to professionally fix it.

IF anyone has some ideas on how I can fix it on my own I would greatly appreciate it.

Well first off Welcome to MOL!!!!

I can tell you it's not the products fault.
Think of a compound as "liquid Sand Paper"
So your "sanding" the paint. You need to use a less aggressive product to remove the "sanding marks".
I can recommend Ultimate Polish or a cleaner wax, which has "light" polish in it.
What kind of car is this?
Some are more susceptible to "micro marring" then others.

Don't worry, you can fix this yourself.
Be patient and others will chime in.

It's a 2009 VW GTI. I think I'm just goin to take it to a local detailer and have them do the hood for 50 bucks. I just wanted to see if this is permanent damage or not? I've only had the car for 2 months and it broke my heart to see those marks lol.

I would like todo it on my own but I just don't feel confident enough after seeing what I did the first time. I can fix cars all day long but when it comes to paint I've never had good luck

Also, what is the exact term for the problem shown in the pics? are they swirls? or micromarring? or what?

I think some UP can remove that, even by hand

Always start with the least aggressive process / product first fella , I know it s to late , but it can be fixed . As stated , Ultimate Compound or Ultimate Polish should do the trick .

Paint correction by hand is hard, as your finding out.

If you want to fix this yourself and not take it to a pro then your going to need some tools.

An inexpensive tool is the new DAPS, Drill Activated Power System.

for $60 bucks you'll have the power to polish out anything.

Ok I may try that. Did the scratch x 2.0 go thru the the clear coat? Or are those swirls and marks on top of it? I am really scared to polish thru the clear coat.

Does anyone know about the Nu Finish stuff? I applied it 3-4 times as it said it would remove swirls, but it did absolutely nothing.

NuFinish is a mild cleaner/wax... I dont think it is really meant for defect removal.

And no, see no reason you would be through the clear coat. Looks like something in the technique or applicator wasnt quite right.

But yeah, the DAPS works quite well... staying even and uniform by hand is tough, so really helps, and then the working faster also.

I found a local shop that will correct the hood for 45 dollars. does that seem like a reasonable price for just the hood? They seem to have good reviews online.

I think from now on I am going to let pros do the polishing, and I will wash/wax my car myself.

Also, If I was to buy some Ultimate polish and do it myself... I applied mothers synwax after my last pass with the nu finish scratch doctor. How would I remove the wax before using the ultimate polish?

There is nothing wrong with using a Pro as long as they are able to do the work. Just have to check their work, ask questions of what is being done, used, etc to see if it sounds right.

If their first step included a wool pad and a rotary buffer, I may be concerned....

And no need to remove the wax before the Ult. Polish. It is hard to say if it will fix things by hand or not though. It is hard to nail down for sure when the paint and your technique are also variables at this point. But can always try it, then go to the Pro....
