  • #2 Fine-Cut Cleaner

Hi, I have a 2005 black ford 500. I clay barred the hood of my car, by the way I am new to clay barring. My car still has a high gloss as I have one step waxed with Meguiars's Gold Wax since I've had the car. I had some concerns about the dulling lubricant that the barring had left behind. I was told by supposedly a auto detailor when he looked at the car that I needed #2 Fine-Cut Cleaner, and #26 yellow wax, and he suggested 2 buffing pads. I did the application by hand on the hood. After the application I buffed out using a cotton tee shirt. I noticed some fine hair line scratches in the clear coat or paint of the car. I have an orital 10 inch random orbital
with 3300 speed. Do I need to use that. It has a nice shine to the hood but will buffing take out swirls?. It looks like I did better with the one step wax, although it was time for the deep wax detailing. Any suggestions?

First of all, welcome to MOL!
IMO, M02 was not intended to develop a wax-ready finish. My old Meguiar's tech bulletin from the 80's says to use M09 to remove the fine swirls left by M02. Today, you can use either M09 or M205 (professional) or UP (consumer) as a final polish. Then it should be LSP-ready. Also, your choice of bonnets on your orbital will affect the final outcome. A coarse terrycloth bonnet will likely leave its signature behind in the form of fine swirls.

Thank you Bill. The advise on the orbital was great as well as what product to use to remove swirls. Still wondering about the white hair line scratches after buffing out the #2 fine-cut cleaner.

You need to lose the t-shirt for buffing off the polish (and waxes for that matter). Invest in some good quality microfiber towels.

As for the fine scratches, they may have been there all along, but hidden by you wax, and now that you've clayed / polished the paint they have revealed themselves.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks Davey g-force. I never really thought about the scratches possibly being there to begin with. And by the way the t-shirt was suggested by the sales man at the auto supply store. Not my idea. I'm somewhat a novice at these things.
