  • what could possibility fix this?

Grease grease and I think grease. Would a carpet extractor even get this clean?

I did this interior and it was a nightmare. Of course I couldn't get much out. Although if you saw the bucket of crud I shampooed out you'd think different. Customer was happy with it but I wasn't. He was very happy with the trim and seats degreased. He could tell the difference and knew ahead of time I wouldn't get much out.

I'm thinking carpet replacement is the only realistic option.

Sorry posting with iPhone. Don't know how to post photos. Will post when I get on desktop.

Re: what could possibility fix this?

Sorry for the delay. I ended up sitting for another hour or so in the garage eating my burgers and watching a movie on TV. Then went to grab a chocolate malt and drink it at the local park. What a beautiful day. Now to the ugly, lol

The before and after shots are such a slight difference. I again feel like I didn't do enough. Problem is I know again right off that I couldn't make much of a dent and the customer knew it. He said if I could lighten it up some, then great. Like I said in previous post, he was happy and could tell the difference and saw the bucket of goo that did come out. Anywho what do you expect from a Bissell Little Green Pro Heat Machine. LIGHT to Medium duty, not heavy, lol

    Before carpet clean

After carpet clean - big difference eh? lol

    Before carpet clean

After carpet clean - forgot to wipe up excess water before taking shot - Basically looks like I just vacuumed

    Before carpet clean

After carpet clean - yes again the Bissell took a lot of crud out, but this carpet is too far gone, and yes again looks like I only vacuumed. But hey the far right side is a little lighter, lol

    Before carpet clean

After carpet clean - Now this part is the only part that came out the best

Seats were trashed but came out so much better, including the trim, which I failed to take shots of.

Seats Before Left side of seat done, middle and right section not

Far left and partial middle cleaned

    Seats Before any cleaner

    Seats After

Again sorry for these photos. It was rough for me to try and tackle this with only a small shampooer. I guess as long as the customer was happy. It's ok. He's the one I'm doing the paint correction for as well next weekend on his 1998 GMC Yukon, which this was from. I'm just thankful I did the interior this weekend. NOW WAY would I have wanted to tackle this then do another 12 hours or so of paint correction. He hauls engines is other car parts in it all the time, now maybe you understand the severity of the carpet.

Sometimes you do the best you can, and it is what it is. I see a lot of cars like this, and it is tough. Did you try a solvent on the greasy spots? Some of the cheap carpets used in newer cars are very difficult to clean.

What extractor are you using? You mentioned bissel are you using a spotbot? If your going to be detailing for a living you will need something more powerful! Look at some of the mytee units they are spendy but you would be surprised how much cleaner the carpets will come out! Also what are you using for solution and pre spotting?

This is a falls into the neglected category.
So therefor you can't expect spectacular results.
A steamer might have a help, a little.
Your dealing with greasy oily dirt. Nothing you could have done would have brought this back to new conditions.
Your a detailer not a miracle worker.
Spray, brush, wipe. repeat as necessary.

Re: what could possibility fix this?

Bissell Little Green Machine Pro Heat is what I was using with the Bissell solution for the machine and used 3 different pre spot cleaners to try and help. It's actually about 10 years old now. WAY old, lol

Simple green, Scotchguard - oxy spot and stain remover, and Meguiar's all purpose cleaner plus diluted at 4:1.

I've been looking into the mytee lites. I can't afford much at all. So even getting that would be an added debt I can't do. Maybe sometime into the future. In fact I had a car dealer contact me asking my rates and wanting more info on what I do. One of the first things was, do you have a carpet extractor. But yeah to that fact that this is his work truck and is neglected.

I thought about the steamer, but decided not to waste anymore time. I spent too much time on it to being with knowing I couldn't do much with it, as did he. I just can't stand to not get the results I truly would've liked to see. But that has always created a problem for me, because I end up battling myself in my own head, lol.

Oh well what do you do. I'm thinking NOT take on those anymore. I actually did not look at it, until the day I was going to do it and was like WHAT!!! lol He had told me it was greasy and probably couldn't do much, so at least he was already knowing.

It is a big difference, there's only so much one can do... The vehicle is in bad condition to begin with, and it shows in the after shots... these kinds of "cared for" cars, too neglected and abused, a recarpet/reupholster may be the only way to bring it back to like new state..

Re: what could possibility fix this?

I have a Bissell Auto care pro heat and I think it works great. I detailed cars like this before and this is my own opinion but I think it's not all about the extractor. I think it's mostly about the chemicals you use and the way you brush it in. I been doing carpets for a long time and I will tell you my method. For carpets like this I will use a heavy duty degreaser from Costco or Sams club. Janitorial supply type stuff.

These are the steps I would take on this vehicle.
                1. Vacuum all loose debris
                2. Use a mask from this point on and, One area at a time spray the degreaser with a spray bottle or a pump sprayer
                3. Brush the carpet. I use a drill attachment brush and a regular carpet scrubbing brush.
The way I brush is the same way I would use a Buffer on a car. I would do passes left to right and then up and down.
4.use a towel to soak up all the nasty crud that comes up and use a bucket with water to ring out the towel so that way you can soak up more dirt without spreading it.
the reason I use a towel first is because usually it will be foamy with the degreaser and make a mess with the extractor.
                5. After the foam is gone extract the area with your Bissell Little Green, depending on the solution in your tank you should be able to extract all the degreaser too. Don't use Meguiar's super degreaser for this, it is really strong and I am scared it might discolor the fabric. repeat steps 2-5 until you are satisfied with the results.

By the way I do think you did the best you could and that carpet was never cared for.

Sorry for all the post but I forgot to add that Dawn soap also works great for grease and oil.

Re: what could possibility fix this?

Thanks to all the comments. You all have made me feel better about the job. I get down on myself when something doesn't go the way I want it to and I feel bad. I always want my clients to me happy, but I always let them know up front about what I may or may not be able to do to cover myself. I never use oh yeah I can do that 100% guaranteed. NO NO, lol.

anywho again thank you to the ones who replied understanding that this was a very neglected interior. Of course we'd all love to get everything out and perfect, but that's not the kind of world we live in.

                      I appreciate everyon'es input.

Re: what could possibility fix this?

I don't think 'making a silk purse out of a pigs ear' was ever totally possible with that mess.

I do have a suggestion, do you have a 'janitorial supply' store nearby? If so, go talk with them. You'd be surprised what (and how many) pre-sprays are available for poo like that carpet was.

For 'greasy' spots, sometimes waterless hand cleaners work wonders.
