  • RFEW dilution

    Hi guys,

I was wondering what the dilution ratio would be to use the gary dean method with the RFEW. How much would I put in a 4 gallon bucket and how much in the spray bottle. Thanks ahead of time.

The correct dilution ratio for RFEW is 1oz to 2 gallons of water. This dilution ratio is for lightly soiled vehicles. For a dirty vehicle you can go 1oz to 1 gallon of water but I have read it will strip off your wax and dressings. As for your spray bottle...I assume you are looking for a pre-soak in which I dilute the same as the wash.

      Re: RFEW dilution

We've become fans of Garry Dean's wash method, even mentioning it specifically in our seminar on Alternative Wash Methods at Detail Fest recently. A great way to ensure that you're getting proper dilution ratio for this is to do the following:

      • Fold the towels you want to use for the washing process and place them in an empty bucket.
      • Fill a one gallon bottle with water (an empty bottle of store bought drinking water works great for this) and add half an ouce of D114. Pour this into the bucket containing the towels.
      • Repeat the above until you're reached the desired level in the bucket, then pour any remaining mixed solution into a 32 ounce spray bottle.

I do this at home and have a gamma seal on my bucket so I can seal it up and use the solution in the future, at a moments notice, to wash our three cars. I'll leave the solution in the bucket for up to two weeks, and just add more towels as needed. I can usually wash as many as 6 cars with this mix.

If you're only going to wash one vehicle you don't need more than a couple gallons of water in the bucket so pouring off 32 ounces of the mix into a spray bottle isn't going to leave you short. Of course, if you don't like filling that empty gallon jug a few times you can use a similar process fill an empty bucket a gallon at a time and just make fill marks on the bucket with a Sharpie. In the future you can then fill the bucket with the appropriate amount of water, add the appropriate amount of D114, and then add your towels.

Otherwise, that 32 oz spray bottle is only going to need 1/8 oz of D114 and that might be a bit tricky to measure out.

Is there an official stance on using rfew as clay lube and as a qd?

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to try this out once I get some time. I have a gallon of RFEW and have hardly used it. Now I have a very good method of how to use it.
