  • Med cut metal polish

I have read the chrome is extremely hard and it is really tough to get scratches out of it. I have been checking advance auto for the med cut metal polish and finally today they had it. I bought it and I completely removed my running board from my truck to try to get the scratches out. I used a yellow 4 in softbuff pad with my meg da on speed 4 and tried 5 and this stuff did not touch it. It has crossed my mind to use a mf 3 in cutting pad. Or buying some marroon cutting pads but I don't want to cause damage. I know they are running boards and they are going to get scratched but my question is: Has anyone else tried the medium cut and had luck getting scratches out of chrome? Anyone have insight on what I could try next?

May have to define scratches, or if you have any pics?... Much like paint, there is a limit to what can be removed, and metal can be tougher.

And, unfortunately, you are now experiencing this first hand. This is partly why we recommend that you NOT use our Heavy Cut Metal Polish on chrome - it can actually create a fine haze in the finish which, in turn, can be very hard to remove. Chrome is one of those surfaces that you can fairly easily inflict a scratch into, but it is very resistant to leveling in order to remove that scratch. The two mechanisms are very different though - creating scratches means you are essentially creating a cut in the surface, while polishing out scratches means you have to abrade a thin layer of material off the surface in a uniform fashion. Look at this way: take a very sharp knife (or even a razor blade) and drag it across a stick of room temperature butter, and then do the same to a piece of raw steak. Both will cut (scratch) very easily. Now try to remove the cut (scratch) by leveling the surface. With the butter all you need to do is lightly drag a flat blade across the surface, taking off a small sliver from the upper surface, and that butter stick is once again totally smooth and level. Now try doing that with the steak. Not so easy, huh?

your can't remove deep scratches from chrome.
Chrome is a very hard metal. A deep scratch in the chrome is the chrome removed from that area. So you would need to remove the chrome from around the scratch to make the surrounding chrome is at the level of the scratch. So this is impossible because chrome is hard as chrome.
All you can do is polish the light hairline scratches that are on the surface of the chrome and even these really don't come out you just hide them with a shine.
But you can defiantly make your chrome look better.

The medium cut polish and then following that with the finish cut definitely made the chrome look way better. I was just hoping to get rid of the scuffs and lighten up a few scratches. But ah well it looks better i guess.

Yea that's what I expected. But it does look better so that's an improvement.
