  • Need advice for 94 Jeep Gran Cherokee Laredo...

OK a little about whats going on....I bought a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo as sort of a project ride. I am new to working on cars so I thought this would be a good one to work on to learn and whatnot. So I want to learn how to put a nice polish and wax on and try to get this paint looking as good as it can. I have been reading alot and never knew waxing your car got this hardcore. I am really interested in it though and want to learn the most I can. Overall the paint looks pretty damn good to me for being 18yrs old. The only bad thing I can see is the hood is like all spider webbed or cracked...like thousands of cracks in the clear coat it seems, I am not sure of the correct term for it but I can post pics if needed but it seems it may have happened from the heat perhaps?!@? Well there is a $40 off $100 coupon floating around the net for Advance Auto, so I went ahead and got (was gonna do in this order)(All Maguiars) 1. Smooth Surface Clay Kit 2. Ultra Compound 3. NXT 2.0 I thought that is how I should do it but I started reading more and now I am just a little confused. Also I will be using a porter cable 7424 polisher. Questions are..1. Am I using the right products in the right order? 2. What can I do to the hood, is it safe to polish and wax or will it just flake away? and 3. What type of maguairs pads should I get and will they fit on the Porter Cable Polisher? Also any hints tips or secrets will be appreciated also. Thanks for all your help guys...

I also was just gonna borrow the porter cable polisher but I am 95% sure I will go ahead and buy a Meguiar or Griots Garage DA Polisher now that I have been looking at em...

      Your proposed process looks sound.

You might want to add Ultimate Polish between your Steps 2&3 if UC leaves any marring behind, or you just want to further refine the paint.

Just do a test spot with UC first to see if you're achieving the results you're after before doing the whole car.

Have you watched any of the vids about using a DA?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

No but I was planning on it, I was gonna borrow a Porter Cable but learned I would have to buy the backer plate and all these pads so I decided to spend the $100 on a griots garage next pay day. I really wanna do this I just didn't know it took all this stuff but I am slowly accumulating all that I need...

I would also suggest adding in UP after UC as this will really bring out depth in color and gloss and add a great refining step after UC.
