  • Painted Trailblazer side mirror covers..

I just painted the black plastic sideview mirror covers on my Chevy Trailblazer about 1 week ago. I first sanded and applied 2 coats of adhesion promoter, then applied 5 coats of Duplicolor Paint Match and then 5 coats Duplicolor Protective Clear Coat by following the directions on the spray can. On the Duplicolor application tips, it says to "wet sand with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper, wash, dry, buff using a wool buffing pad and fine grit buffing compound. Then follow up with a foam pad with a finishing compound. Apply a quality automotive wax after 1 week."*

I've tried looking for these compounds that it says to use, but I can't find any that actually says "buffing compound" or "finishing compound". I've seen maybe a couple for industrial use, but I'm looking for something cheaper and in a smaller bottle. Can you please recommend me some products that would work for my paint project? I'm a complete novice at this stuff.

    Sorry for the long inquiry
    Thanks for any help

Sorry I can't give you the correct Meguiar's part #'s , maybe some one else can help . However I use 3M part # 39002 rubbing compound for the first cut with a wool pad . I then follow up with a product called Race Glaze leveling compound with a black foam pad . Then I use Meguiar's cleaner wax . I have been doing body work for 30 years . Painted thousands of vehicles . This method always worked wonderful me . The reason I don't use Meguiars compounds is my local paint supplier doesn't carry the compounds without special ordering them . They have all the buffing pads , wax , detail products , but no compound . I would wet sand with 2000 or greater ie: 2500 , 3000 . Anything courser I wouldn't recommand with a novice . Good luck and take your time , you'll do fine !

        Thanks for the replies.
I was close to a Sherwin Williams Automotive store yesterday and I went in and asked the guy at the desk his opinion, and he went out and looked at my mirror covers and recommended me not putting anything on them. He said chances are if I do any type of wet sanding, buffing or polishing, most likely the clear coat will come off since it was just applied with a aerosol can. He also said he didn't think there was much chance of getting much of a glossy look than what I had already on there. He rubbed the cover with is hand and looked at it and said some of the clear coat is already starting to come off. I think the guy was being honest cause he didn't try and sell me any of his products and if I were to use something, he didn't have anything that would work for me he said. So I guess that's that.
